Eric Reed - The next Juan Pierre

Featured Replies

The next Pierre? In terms of work habits and professionalism, there is only one Pierre. But the Marlins have a prospect who draws comparisons to the speedy center fielder.

Eric Reed is cut from the same cloth as Pierre. Both are left-handed hitting burners who can flat-out fly.

Reed actually may be faster in a foot race, having been clocked in the 40-yard dash at 4.28 seconds while at Texas A&M.

Thus far in Spring Training, Reed has yet to turn on the jets. Recovering from a hernia procedure, Reed feels a bit of discomfort in his right groin. He suffered the injury while playing in the Arizona Fall League.

Because of his size and speed, Reed has been mentioned as another Pierre. Comparisons are nothing new for Reed, who was called the next Jason Tyner when he was in college.

"It's an honor because I know Juan is an elite player in the Major Leagues," Reed said. "For me to be compared to him, that really helps me out a lot. At the same time, I'm my own player. When I was at Texas A&M, people were trying to compare me to Jason Tyner. I don't try to live up to what Jason Tyner did, and put undo pressure on myself."

He's participating in drills in camp, where he is battling for a reserve outfield spot, but the Marlins would like for Reed to incorporate bunting into his game a bit more.

Reed says he has bunted effectively in the past, but for various reasons will go through stretches where he stops.

"I think I get a little cocky, wanting to hit," Reed says. "I should do a lot more bunts. I'll be bunting and hitting good, and then I'll just stop. I'll try a couple, and I won't get any down, then I'll lose confidence in it. You've got to practice bunts to use it in the game."

Very nice to see. I've read a lot about him before. He's VERY fast. I guess the only thing to worry about with him is if he could hit in the majors also. He has to be able to hit somewhat. And although he may be faster than Pierre, I doubt he's better than Pierre at bunting. I bet he also doesn't work as hard as Pierre. Pierre, Castillo, and Reed? A lot of speed there...

You'd never have the three together. Reed will be JP's replacement.

I was thinking about that but then I though about replacing Reed for Niner.

Reed, Pierre, and Miguel in the OF. That would really help because we would put Miguel in LF where he wants to play because there is less room and because he can read the ball much easier from there. And Reed or JP can take CF. It doesn't really make much of a difference.

We don't have to have them all in at the same game so many times but once in a while is ok...Reed can give Niner a day off.

Well I think Enc will be the starter in RF this year. It would be tough to swallow sitting 4 million all year. Plus having Conine off the bench in the later innings as a defense replacement for Carlos is a good thing to have. Or even as a double switch partner for Enc. Enc is probably also the better of the two defensively.

Enc's contract is up after this year. Barring some breakout year, people won't be banging on his door for him. I think we'll keep him for less money that the 4 million. Unless Aguila is something after this year.

Plus if Reed is a lot like Pierre, as in no arm, do you want two rubber bands in the OF?

....that and you could put Willingham or Hermida in the OF next year

or even Aguila

Why must you forget about Hermida, the best prospect in our system? He is the future of our outfield.

Just because we pay Encarnacion a lot of money doesn't mean we need to play him. It's simple, we play the players that perform the best. And Encarnacion isn't one of our 3 best outfielders, so guess what? He shouldn't get to play! If Reed is better than him overall, then he's gonna play and not Encarnacion.

And although I'd guess that Reed probably doesn't have a great arm, even if he has an arm like Pierre, he's capable of running down a lot of balls like Pierre because of his speed, and is thus, better than Encarnacion even on defense. Be honest with yourself, our opponents don't get an extra base because of Pierre weak arm so often. So even if he has a weak arm it's not so bad.

Enc is a pretty darn good OFer

scouts say Reed is a better defender than Pierre, fyi

Ugh...I don't even want to think about signing that guy for next year. If he has a breakout year, hopefully someone else will want him and we might get some draft picks. If he doesn't, I don't want him for another year of underperformance. You can officially put me on the "Get Rid of Encarnacion" bandwagon - and spring training games haven't even started...

Back on topic...Hopefully the front office doesn't use a breakout spring (or minor league year) to let JP leave and have Reed replace him. JP is going to have a monster year in terms of walks, runs, and BA. He's a keeper - and if Reed is anything like him, I'd gladly let him replace Encarnacion.

And you know this how?

If you're at first and there's a base hit right up the middle to Pierre and you know he has a weak arm, chances are you'll be digging in for third rather than stopping at second if you have even a decent amount of speed. If you've got a ball hit to Cabrera people will think twice before going first to third or tagging up, if a ball is hit to Pierre it's a non-issue.

IMO if healthy encarnacion is a sure thing starter in rf. Several of the points were made above, conine being a great late inning defensive replacement at 1b, enarnacion is a better fielder etc. Just remember the season encarnacion had in 2003. in the field and at the plate.

If reed is playing rf for the fish anytime soon it does not say good things for the success of hermidia. Hermidia is the future in rf.

Enc's 2003 season wasnt that great

also, I would think Aguila or Willingham would get the chance before Reed

I've read some scouting reports on various sites and most of them point out that even though Hermida is going to be an offensive beast, he needs a lot of work defensively. So if we do see Reed in our outfield before Hermida, this is most likely the reason.

what???

on a normal ball hit right up the middle a runner that was on 1b wont go to 3rd even with Pierre.

thats what happens most of the time...atleast in my honest and humble opinion

if that person on first base is anyone not named Mike Redmond, that player makes it to 3rd

damn man, you must have a really low baseball IQ...

No one will ever be able to replace Pierre. He's the best leadoff man in baseball next to Ichiro. And Reed can't be as fast as Pierre, I mean, he's.............. white :plain

As long as we have Pierre, Reed's best chance to make the team would be to add speed to the bench. The FO may want to keep him in the system to see what happens with Pierre after the 2006 season.

I like the article. I hadnt heard from Reed up until now. If the Marlins did have him, wed have prertty nice speed there. i agree, if someone in the outfield was given a day off, he could start. only once in a while, cuz who knows if he can make a good transition to the majors. its a big difference, ad most people have a rocky start.

696424[/snapback]

It's rightfield. If Hermida bobbles or misplays a ball, we'll only notice it at most once every fifth game. Nothing to be concerned about. But the questions about his throwing arm, those worry me.

Everything I've read about Reed has been good. Better defender and faster than JP. Some pop. May need to improve his plate discipline. Personally, should Pierre leave, I'd rather see Castillo leading off if his legs and hip are still up to it.

Reed probably replaces Pierre in a couple of years.

Zero chance for them to share an outfield.

If Reed progresses....your outfield of the future is Cabrera, Reed, Hermedia.

Not too shabby.

From what I understand of Reed, defensively he is ready, just needs to work on his plate discipline and other finer points at the dish.
