He will sit out tonight's game, and may not be back next game.

First baseman still hampered by elbow tendinitis

By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com

JUPITER, Fla. -- Carlos Delgado's Grapefruit League debut as a Marlin is being pushed back again.

Still bothered by tendinitis in his left elbow, the power-hitting first baseman was not ready to play Monday night against the Dodgers at Roger Dean Stadium.

After taking batting practice Sunday, Delgado was hopeful of returning to the lineup. The former Blue Jay has missed the Marlins' first six Grapefruit League games. The only time he was in the lineup was on March 2 in an exhibition against the University of Miami in Jupiter. He went 0-for-2 with a strikeout that day.

"I'm not all the way back to where I want it," Delgado said Monday afternoon.

Delgado aggravated the elbow of his non-throwing arm when he was training at his home in Puerto Rico before Spring Training started.

The 32-year-old received treatment on Monday and will try hitting again on Tuesday at Roger Dean Stadium.

The Marlins will play the Dodgers in Vero Beach on Tuesday, but Delgado will not make the trip.

The earliest he will be available will be Wednesday when the Red Sox visit Jupiter. That might be pushing it.

"It's frustrating because you definitely want to go out there and play," Delgado said. "You've got to be smart. I don't think it's a big deal. I wish I could say it will be tomorrow."

This early in spring, the Marlins are in no hurry to rush their star free agent into the lineup.

"Who would think a baseball player would get tennis elbow," quipped Delgado.

What is tennis elbow?

Read about it.

The bad news:

It can linger for a few weeks to months. Even then it can come back. And it is frowned upon to work on the elbow while it is still sore. So I think even if he miraculously gets better in the next few days he will have to take it easy and I am not sure he'll have enough of Spring Training to be himself come opening day.

Also, I am not sure on this, but for a right handed batter isn't the left elbow the dominant one? I stopped playing baseball years ago, but I think I remember my left arm always aching more after swinging for a long period of time if I went into a machine or something like that. So if that is true I think it would be reversed for a lefty.

Well the only good news is that we still have 30 days to go. So let him take a few days off or whatever and then start hitting. No need to rush

But its also not a good sign that he got pushed back atleast 4 days from when they thought he would play his first game

This is not good news. There must be more to this. I hope we do not end up with another Beckett 2004 situation. It cannot be good especially knowing FO wants to showcase their 54 million dollar investment. We shall see. I don't like it.

well, he's lefty, so i guess that could be good-ish news

it's concerning, but i'll be ok unless this persists to, say, a week before opening day

Best to take it easy since ST doesn't count for s***.

The problem is is that then he will be using the start of the season as spring training and the start of the year consist of 16 straight division games for us, and it would behoove us to get off to a good start within the division.
