Shaq played Baseball

Featured Replies

Did you ever play baseball?

Yes. I played first base and pitcher my first and second year in high school.

Any good?

As a pitcher, I lasted about one or two innings. I was always pretty good at first base because I could always stretch. I could always meet the ball before guys got there.

So, what happened?

I could always catch and throw, but the game was too slow for me. It never interested me. And I was never a good hitter. If I made contact with the ball, I was a good hitter, but I had a real big strike zone.

Have you ever faced any major leaguers since you've been in the NBA?

No, but I am going to go out and start doing that because my youngest son loves baseball. I always talk to him like I was the greatest baseball player in the world, so I have to show him I can play a little bit.

How tough do you think it would be to hit a fastball?

Tough and scary. When I watch it on TV, guys like Pedro Martinez and the Big Unit (Randy Johnson), they throw fast and hard, and they will hit you. That's what's kind of scary about it. You got to have near perfect hand-eye coordination to hit it.

If they hit you, what would you do?

Oh, go fight. You got to fight.

Could anybody in baseball take you?

No.
