higgy article

Higgy deal could be close: What seemed like a remote possibility of finding a trade partner for Bobby Higginson is looking a little stronger. The Florida Marlins have continued to express interest in Higginson, even after he was not released Saturday, and might consider acquiring him in exchange for a mid-level prospect, industry sources told MLB.com. A Tigers scout was reportedly in attendance at the Marlins' game on Sunday against the Cardinals in Jupiter. Higginson was not on Sunday's travel roster, but a Marlins scout saw his performance on Saturday.

The Tigers would have to pick up nearly all of the $8.85 million owed Higginson this season in the final year of his contract, but instead of releasing him, they would have the consolation of receiving something in return. Higginson would also have to approve a deal, and he said on Saturday that he does not want to go to a rebuilding team. The Marlins are obviously not in that situation.

If a trade is consummated, it would put another former Tigers player on the Marlins, whose utility infielder, Damion Easley, had the final two years of his contract eaten by the Tigers when they released him out of camp two years ago. Other former Tigers on Florida's roster include Juan Encarnacion, Todd Jones and Matt Perisho. Mike DiFelice, another former Tigers player, was r

eleased by the Marlins on Sunday.

Please, don't do it.

It would be the biggest waste of a mid-level prospect I've seen in a while.

He has been a major frustration for us...The best he can do is draw a walk, and above average defense, strong arm.

I'll take him for Dillion. Best thing you'd be able to get for 30 year old prospect.

He vowed to not take a walk this season, yet he's supposed to take walks?

We have above average defene with a strong arm, Juan Encarnacion. We also have above average defense with an average arm in Jeff Conine. And it isn't like Pierre is out for 2 months or something, he'll be back in the next couple of weeks if not less. Not worth it.

He has like a career .359 OBP, because of his walks, 70 last year. He has said his goal is to be more aggressive this year, to be seen. He does give the fans the final out ball all the time....The kids like that...

Getting Higginson makes Encarnacion and a prospect expandable for a RP.

There are also a few relievers teams have expressed interest in, maybe it is a multiplayer deal. Tram may keep 12 pitchers, instead of 11 just so he dont have to let one go, of the RP's. Its in the article on the same page.

You have to be kidding.

Juan is already expendable thanks to Jeff Conine, but he isn't going anywhere due to that contract of his. He's a free agent this year, might as well give him a shot. He's even been drawing walks and waiting counts out in Spring Training, maybe thanks to the eye surgery he had in the offseason. He's a 7th hitter who we have everything to gain and nothing to lose from, since most aren't even expecting over a .250 average. He's going to give you guaranteed superior defense and he could have a solid year at the bat, in any case I'll take those 93 RBIs again no matter what the batting average.

I fail to see how this would benefit the Marlins...

Very well said. I couldn't agree more...

No matter how much we want to get rid of ENC, he CANNOT be traded for as long as JP is injured.

i'd wait for him to be released, personally.

Conine will be the primary back-up to sore elbow over there this year at first.

Easley is covering 2b, ss, 3b this year since there is no Mordy, that leaves Conine to need to cover 1b and RF. I don't think Conine will start more than 50 games this year.

Higginson would add a second lefty power bat and give us 4 left handed (or switch-hitting) bats in the line up, very nice balance. If we were able to move Encarnacion with say Stokes, who we have little use for, we would be able to pick up a good RP I am sure and be able to have Aguila and Willingham and Lenny all on the bench together I think.

This might also be to give us a RF if Juan E. is playing CF come opening day. JP isn't talking about his injury with the rags, and that is never a positive sign.

Id love to take the risk on Higgy(depends on who we give up of course)

I don't see where the fascination with trading Enc is, since he has about as much trade value as I do right now. In fact, I'd net more in a trade since I'm not making 4+ million dollars. But if we thrown in a prospect who not only will never see the light of day in our system but also can knock over a light tower with the breeze from his bat after he strikes out for the third time that night, we'll be fine!

dear god no -- Higginson is terrible.

what a mistake that would be.....

If Beinfest wants to do it i am not going to question him. The man hasnt made a mistake in 3 years

lets not go that far

JP will be back before the end of April. Why would we take on the liability (and bench spot) for Higginson?

Waiting for JP, choose three OF from this list: Cabrera, Conine, Encarnacion, Aguila, Little, Willingham, Dillon, Harris, Easley...

Enc, Aguila and Little can cover CF. (One at a time, of course.)

Little could be sent down when JP is ready.

We don't need Higginson.

For those who don't follow Tigers baseball, what is the deal with Higginson? I know he has a big contract but I seem to recall him being the lone good player when the Tigers had that terrible 2003 season.

  • Author

The major frustration with him is that he never lived up to his big contract Over 8 milllion this year, and tends to spout off against management publicly (some deserved) and even Dombrowski, after the Weaver trade example, claiming it was personal. He was healthy last year for the first time in a few years, and just couldnt do it. He takes a lot of pitches trying to walk, he walked 70 times, but got rung up 84 times. There was a sentiment among certain people that 28 year old Craig Monroe should of got the shot at the starting job (41 hrs last 2 years). With Alex Sanchez released this Spring Monroe will get his playing time this year.
