all those excuses really don't fly because AZ is pretty similar

traffic out here is horrible and the only thing downtown are the stadiums .... most everyone has to drive 30-60 mins

there are tons of other options out here to do as well .... weather is perfect this time of year

our population dwindles in the summer

we have tons of transplants that aren't tied to the d-backs

it's a new franchise

they've won 1 ring and fell on hard times ... the marlins won 2 rings, fell on hard times and are now a very competative team

the other night the d-backs had a record low crowd against the rockies ... that was just over 20k

Well there is probably nothing else to do in Arizona :lol

By that logic there should be teams in one of the Daktotas, in Idaho... and you see where I am going with this. ;)

heh .. i'm pretty sure she was playing around

it's funny though ... other sports out here can struggle to get attendence and one of the first things they mention is "there are too many options for sports fans to spend their money on"

but for teams that are a good draw all the excuses that apply to others really don't fit in anymore

You can't compare South Florida to some of the other markets mentioned. The big difference in my opinion is the divided loyalties among the sports fans here. You have people from the Northeast who for the most part DO NOT give up their allegiances to the teams they grew up with. Then you have people here from all over the world who haven't been indoctrinated into the sports culture here, aside from a casual and passing interest.

As a result South Florida, due to the transient nature of its residents, has a lot of casual fans and not a lot of "die hards" like in other cities. Even cities such as Atlanta and Phoenix with a large population of transplant struggle with attendance in the other sports (Arizona football, Atlanta in everything else).

Bottom line...let's not worry too much about the exact attendance numbers. I think we have a very knowledgable and classy fan base, if not a large one.

excellent post. I'm seeing some people being converted to the Fish, but it is a slow and painful process

really football is the main thing that struggles out here and that is mainly due to ownership and having 1-2 competative teams since they've been in AZ

baseball draws well, basketball usually draws well, hockey did decent once the new stadium opened (although attendence league wide isn't anything spectacular comparetively), lacrosse gets between 6-11k a game, arena football sells out

basically it's ASU and the cards that struggle ... everyone else does about average to above

I was at the game today and the announced attendance was 14,5xx... can't remember the exact number but it was in the 14's.

When people are at work or school, you can't really go to the games...now can you?

Watch an afternoon game at Chicago or Boston or LA or Arizona or half a dozen other cities. They manage to fill in the seats.

All those cities have major universities within 10 minutes of their park, something JRS does not have. Chicago especially packs the park with university aged 'fans', who either skip class or don't have class at the time and catch in a baseball game.

Almost 15k for the second week of April on a Wednesday afternoon? That's perfectly fine.

It sucks. A team as competitive as we are should easily be doing 20K.

741080[/snapback]

What section were you in today? How many friends did you bring with you to the game?

I think it would be hard from someone in Connecticut to make the game. :mischief

How many games do you go to when you are home from school? Do you have a ticket package?

Arizona's market is a bunch of retired old people.

Cubs and Red Sox fans don't go to work :lol but yeah, they ALWAYS sell out, so that doesn't count.

LA is a GIANT market, so the percentages say they will pretty much always fill a lot of seats.

As for my opinion, 15 K for a Wednesday afternoon game is nothing to be ashamed of, but 15 K for ANY night game is pathetic.

I am going again next week for the half off thursday day, so even though I am 6 hours away that will be my 3rd game of the year.

No I don't get a package, because I would miss the start of them and he back end. But I usually used to make it to 10-15 games a year over the summer out in the OF Reserve. But seeing as those prices have gone up, I might be cutting back a bit. I liked it when the tickets were cheaper than parking, not so much anymore.

So, you're complaining to people that go 30, 40 times a year when you go 10-15 and now you're cutting back?

I'm going to go somewhere around 50 times this year, I've already gone 6 of the first 9, and I really am sick of the attendance threads. You are complaining to the wrong people and are accomplishing nothing. Complain about Miguel's defense or Mota's lack of saves or something.

I have to pay for myself, and I take summer classes, work, and what not, I have things to do rather then spend 4 hours a day dedicated to baseball.

I am not complaining about that people don't go, nor am I shaming them. What I am saying is that this fan base people talk of is just not there. We were suppose to hit all these attend. highs last year, and things were looking good for this year. Its just not there. Making people in Levy county pay for a stadium 15K south floridans will enjoy a night is a waste.

Hard for Mota to get saves when we are up by 8, we should win every game by 8.

And I will only complain about Miggy's D once he starts making errors at 3b since that is his position.

heh ... and florida isn't a refuge for retirees?!

as we all know as soon as the temps hit 90 the old people start to de-ice their primary homes ... as soon as they hit 100 they hop on a plane as soon as it hits 110 there are few left and as soon as it hits 120 the remaining ones die

I pay for my season tickets too, so that's nice of you but you aren't the only one.

The fan base exists, though not in its present area. Broward had its chance, now it should be ours. If you give Miami ten years to have the stadium and the fans don't show night in and night out, then maybe you are right. But until then you are talking to the Broward fans.

Dolphin Stadium is about halfway between Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. There are plenty of fans that come from the south. A move to the south disenfranchises most of the WPB fans I would think, I don't see why they would drive about 3 hours round trip for a 3 hour game.

And whats wrong about Broward fans? Are they not good fans? They gave the Panthers an average crowd of 16K a night last year... and they were a bad team that hasn't done anything in years. The Marlins were returning champs and threw together a 22K average... aweomse... just awesome...

So, it takes the same exact amount of time to get from Fort Lauderdale and from Miami to JRS at 5:30 PM on a weeknight?

There's a reason why Saturday and Sunday have been the biggest non-Opening Day attendances of the year.

The majority of the population in Dade county is in the south. Dolphin Stadium is WAYYYYYYY closer and more accessible to fans in broward and even Palm Beach. Have you ever gone to JRS to be at a 7 o'clock game coming from Kendall? You would understand.

If you think Sat. and Sun. crowds are only the best crowds in Dolphins stadium, that is hilarious.

When you are a good team you should do good in attendance, there shold be some comprobable coorelation, and the Marlins finishing in the bottom third in attendance is a joke.

From Yahoo!:

Ft. Lauderdale to DS

18 miles/30mins

Miami to DS

14.5miles/21 mins

And if you guys think the traffic is only bad on the south side, you are sadly mistaken.

I want Yahoo in a car on I 95 or the Turnpike or the 826 during rush hour to tell me that.

Again the majority of the population is south of downtown.

Stop throwing out garbage.

Is every thread you post in turn into crap? Anyone see a trend.

what I find disapointing is the expectations are so low

we strive to see attendence break the 2M mark ... which according to last years numbers would put the marlins 20th in the league

when you strive to improve to 20th it's not the best thing

florida is better than that

Anyway look, the stadium is closer to Miami then Ft. Lauderdale, go figure. I think you need to think up a new arguement.

Oh please, Ive been on both sides. its a fact the traffic patterns in the afternoon go from south to north and in the mornings from north to south. Have you ever been stuck in that traffic, I have.

Phish, how many people from Miami do you think work in Downtown FTL?

Now, how many Broward people work in Downtown MIA? Have you ever actually ridden the 826 or I95 going North and watched the cars going South? They average 60 while we're lucky to top 20 for more than 30 seconds. There's a reason why Miami Dade County has the 3rd worst traffic in the nation behind NY and LA.
