I was doing my daily Tike Redman watch at Pittsburghlive.com and I came across this piece regarding the pitching mound at RFK. Thought I would share...

Notebook: Mounds too soft at RFK

By The Associated Press

Sunday, April 17, 2005

WASHINGTON -- There was a heap of trouble with the new pitching mounds at RFK Stadium.

Washington Nationals manager Frank Robinson and starter Livan Hernandez were among those who said the mound on the field and those in the bullpens weren't built with enough clay, leaving them too soft.

That softness led to holes developing in front of the pitching rubber and in the spot where a pitcher's foot lands as he delivers the ball.

"It was terrible. It's one of the worst mounds I've ever pitched on," Javier Vazquez, the Arizona Diamondbacks' starter against Hernandez in Washington's home opener, said Saturday. "I know Livo had the same problem."

Before the top of the third inning in Washington's 5-3 win Thursday, four members of the grounds crew went out to the mound with a rake, a shovel and a bag of dirt in an effort to fill in the problem spots.

"It's not good when you're throwing. You can hurt your ankle. You don't feel comfortable," Hernandez said. "But it's the first time here. Maybe next time I pitch it'll be ready."

Hmmm...

No wonder the Nats are doing so well at home, the opposition probably throws countless mistake pitches as a result, although the Nats should be effected equally as well so...

They probably did it on purpose :lol

Well I'm sure its going to take the grounds crew some time to have the field just right for play. I'm sure it'll get better as the season moves on..

There is so many odd things with the field. They're using high-powered water hoses to erase the painted diagrams for soccer. That can lead to softer bounces in some parts of the outfield. The infield is cut short, but for some reason balls don't shoot out of the infield like Pro Player. And fly balls dies about 10-15 feet from the wall.

The only charm the old stadium has is that the 3B stands shake.
