Jack on the new pope

Featured Replies

Praises for the new Pope: Before the 2004 season, Marlins owner Jeffrey presented manager Jack McKeon with a Papal Blessing from Pope John Paul II. The Blessing is displayed on the wall of McKeon's office.

An ardent Catholic who attends Mass daily, McKeon followed closely the announcement of the new Pope, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany.

For days, McKeon predicted Ratzinger, now known as Pope Benedict XVI, would be chosen.

McKeon, who is still going strong at 74, was happy to see a 78-year-old get the job.

"He's another guy looking after the senior citizens," joked McKeon. "I should send him a copy of my book."

McKeon's newly released book, "I'm Just Getting Started," co-written by Kevin Kernan of the New York Post, offers inspiration to seniors.

The fun-loving McKeon, an ardent cigar smoker, joked that there was white smoke coming out of his office about the same time word came that Pope Benedict XVI was picked.

"I picked him to get the job," McKeon said. "He looks like a Pope."

I agree. He actually has some positive personality, unlike most MLB managers. :D
