It is? You can get a save when there is a 4 run lead?

i believe if the tying run is on deck??????

i really don't know the rules on saves

i think i'm wrong...

He would've had to enter with a 3 run lead or less. It was not a save.

i'm pretty sure you can make your own save situation.

No you can't come in with a 4 run lead to start an inning, let 3 up and finish the game 1 run ahead and count that as a save.

From the Baseball Almanac:

SAVES FOR RELIEF PITCHERS

10.20 Credit a pitcher with a save when he meets all three of the following conditions:

(1) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and

(2) He is not the winning pitcher; and

(3) He qualifies under one of the following conditions:

(a) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning; or

(b) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batsmen he faces); or

? He pitches effectively for at least three innings. No more than one save may be credited in each game.

So he could potentially get a save entering a game with a 4 or 5 run lead if the bases were loaded for example. He couldn't come in with no one on and give up some runs because it wouldn't qualify under 3a or 3b. He can luck into one if he entered a one run game in the 7th, pitched 3 innings, and his team tacked on a ton of runs.

shows how much i know.

thanks.

Possibly one of the reasons you can't just enter with a 4 run lead and bases empty and get a save if the game ends by a 3 run or less defecit is that it would be an incentive to the closer to give up a run to make it a save situation. Just a thought but it's not that outrageous.

Bump would have had a save tonight if he pitched the 9th.

I think sooner or later we are going to have to find out if Mota can get a save in a real situation or not. I don't think we'll have some of these 4 or 8 runs leads for the whole season, although it would be nice. :whistle

Last year against LA we were down 5-1 I believe, and we loaded the bases with 2 outs in the 9th inning and the Dodgers brought in Gagne for the save
