JMLinkinPark
UM names Wright starting QB By Jorge Milian Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Wednesday, April 27, 2005 CORAL GABLES ? The Kyle Wright era has begun at the University of Miami. UM football coach Admin Coker announced Tuesday that Wright beat out Kirby Freeman for the No. 1 quarterback job. Wright will be the starter when the Hurricanes begin the 2005 season against Florida State on Labor Day night in Tallahassee. More College Sports ? 2005 NFL Draft coverage ? Colleges home ? Weekly e-mail updates The quarterbacks were informed of the decision during a Monday meeting with Coker and offensive coordinator Dan Werner. "It's something I've been waiting for three years now," Wright said. "It's definitely a good feeling to know that my hard work is starting to pay off, but there's a lot more hard work ahead." Coker said experience separated the two quarterbacks. Wright is a third-year sophomore who played in two games last season. Freeman was a redshirt last season as a freshman. "From our standpoint, Kyle is further ahead as far as his knowledge of the offense," Coker said. "It gives him a little bit of an edge." Greatness has been predicted for Wright, a 6-foot-5, 208-pound Californian, since he arrived at UM in the fall of 2003. He was the 2002-03 Gatorade National High School Player of the Year and was considered a better prospect by many analysts than Florida's Chris Leak. SuperPrep ranked Wright as the nation's No. 1 prospect. Wright was a redshirt as a freshman and served as Brock Berlin's backup last season. He played in a mop-up role during a 48-0 win over Louisiana Tech and then saw his most extensive action against Georgia Tech, struggling during four series. A week later, Wright tore ankle ligaments in practice and missed the next six games. He did not play again in 2004. After being told that he was the starter, Wright said he told Coker: "I just hope you know I'm not going to become complacent. It's going to make me even hungrier to prove I deserve it." Freeman said he was "disappointed but not in a bad way." He rejected any notion that he might transfer. "I'm not a selfish football player by any means," said Freeman, who is from Brownwood, Texas. "I know my role. By no means have I thought about any route away from here. I'm excited to be here and I'm excited to be a Hurricane." The quarterbacks battled throughout spring drills, swapping No. 1 quarterback duties. Wright turned a narrow lead over Freeman into a huge advantage with a strong performance in the spring game. He completed 10-of-13 passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns. Freeman completed only 7-of-18 throws, including two interceptions. "I'd be a liar if I said that I don't get goose bumps every time I think about going and playing in Tallahassee for my first start," Wright said. "It's exciting." McCray, Morse injured: Defensive tackle Teraz McCray underwent reconstructive knee surgery recently after tearing two ligaments April 8. McCray, a 6-foot, 286-pound sophomore, could miss the 2005 season. He played in 11 games last season, registering 2.5 sacks and six tackles for losses, and was expected to be a major contributor next season. Guard Derrick Morse broke his left foot while weight lifting Monday and will undergo surgery today. He will be sidelined eight to 12 weeks. Coker said Tuesday that receiver Lance Leggett, who broke his foot during spring practice, has been told he does not need surgery and should be ready to go when fall practice begins in August. Fish Tank Frenzy
Brock Berlin is the BIGGEST PIECE OF $#!T QB the University of Miami EVER had. He single handedly wasted our 2003 season and last year against UNC he couldnt complete a pass for his LIFE. He has no arm strength past 15 yards...He cant even see over the O-Line, he is always hitting the weak side LB right in the chest, thank god some of them couldnt catch. Brock Berlin = MIERDA Brock Berlin will be ATMOST a practice squad player. Now if Im wrong and he has been taking Super QB juice and proves me wrong and becomes Joe Montana Ill be very happy, but I still think he will be in Europe or the AFL come this time next year. Fish Tank Frenzy
I just remembered something else. Against Clemson at HOME, on 4th and goal, with no time left but ONE play, what does brilliant Brock Berlin do? He THROWS THE BALL OUT OF BOUNDS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You say to yourself, Fish Tank Frenzy, that cant be true, no QB will throw the ball OUT OF BOUNDS on 4th and goal no time left !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sheff#1
your an idiot. he had some of the better numbers last year. he was not responsible for last year although ppl will blame him for everything. he was consistent and the s***ty D that allowed 400 f***ing yards a game is the one that constantly blew it. berlin lead comeback after comeback and single handly won 2 or 3 games. he was bad in 03 but he was great last year. Fish Tank Frenzy
Im the idiot? Thats funny. Keep thinking Berlin is NFL material it shows you how smart you are.
UMFan4Life7
Berlin: vs. FSU :whistle And as for that claim of no strength past 15 yards, he threw some bombs downfield that some of the recievers dropped, etc. But, he had an arm, and a stronger one than Dorsey. /end rant
Fish Tank Frenzy
Berlin had some amazing comebacks. No doubt. But dont tell me that Berlin is an NFL talent.
Guest Fritz
Saying someone has a stronger arm than Dorsey is like saying someone is skinnier than Star Jones.
Flying_Mollusk
Berlin was the most frustrating element of last season. There were times where he was brilliant and then there were times where he couldnt hit the broad side of a barn. Lets hope Wright is the next great UM QB. sheff#1
lets put it this way. ARM:Berlin > Dorsey Talent:Berlin> Dorsey Movement: Berlin> Dorsey Accuracy:Berlin=Dorsey Better UM teams:Dorsey>Berlin only reason dorsey had more success is he had better players period. and yet Berlin> dorsey in everyway and Dorsey started like 5 games last year and will be the 2nd QB in SF this year. Also, Rattay and Dorsey were the starting QBs for a 2-14 team. It's not like it was some great accomplishment.

Carolina was actually one of his better games. the offense actually did a very good job that game. it was our defense that wasted that game and the season. do i need to remind you the comebacks he led for us, like last year vs. UF, and this past year vs. FSU and louisville his arm strength and physical talents are comparable to dorsey, but ken was classified as a winner just because he had one of the best o lines ever and incredible amounts of talent around him
Flying_Mollusk
Berlins problems were never with his Oline breaking down and causing pressure on him. Berlin had plays where he had all the time in the world and he would flat out miss wide open recievers. It was just one or two time things either. Mark
Dorsey is 10X smarter than Berlin. Dorsey is one heck of a mental quarterback, one of the best ones in recent years on the college level. However, Dorsey doesn't have near the physical talent that Berlin has. Rix was the same way. Tons of talent, no brain. I would be a rich man if I had a nickel for everytime Berlin or Rix threw into double and triple coverage. However, they both had sick athletes alongside them, especially at WR, which bailed out their stupid mistakes. If Rix or Berlin had any sense of the field to go along with their arms and playmaking abilities, they both could have been special. It's the same with Dorsey, if he had an arm like Berlin alongside his superior mental ability he could have been quite an NFL talent. Not to mention the myriad of injuries and distractions to the team (Ricky, hurricanes, trades, etc.). Also, so Dorsey is only the #2 QB because of injuries. Sage Rosenfels was a starter and he was a #3 QB.

The Fan
Dumbest. Argument. Ever. Both Dorsey and Berlin suck. Neither will be a good NFL player and Berlin won't make the Dolphins unless injury occurs. There is a reason he wasn't drafted.

But dont tell me that Berlin is an NFL talent. 756867[/snapback] I am not saying that...I am just saying he was not a complete bust. Do you know how hard it is to play quarterback with 50,000 people booing you, IN YOUR OWN STADIUM, BY YOUR OWN FANS? He played through that and earned the respect of some fans like me. Other fans/TV analysts still could not respect that.
