June 13, 200521 yr Devil Rays designated outfielder Alex Sanchez for assignment. Only the Rays would cut their second best hitter. Sanchez (.346/.373/.466) and Damon Hollins were the only players on the team with OPSs better than 800. The Rays will go with Hollins and Reggie Taylor in center field for now. Hollins may also get some at-bats at DH, but it would be for the best if Jonny Gomes hits regularly in that spot. Sanchez might be traded before he's placed on waivers. Devil Rays released catcher Charles Johnson. Johnson remains a better bet than a few backups, but he might have as much trouble finding work as Benito Santiago has. He hit .196/.327/.283 in 46 AB for the Rays. Kevin Cash will take over as Toby Hall's backup. -rotoworld

June 14, 200521 yr The same reasons the Tigers let him go.... His defense sucks. He has no real position. For all his speed he cant steal a base worth anything. Great at getting down hits...but thats about it...

June 14, 200521 yr Author Here's why they did this: "He expressed the desire that he wanted to play everyday," Tampa Bay manager Lou Piniella said. "We can understand that, but he wasn't going to do it here. He talked about wanting to go elsewhere, now he's going to get an opportunity." Link
