June 15, 200521 yr Great News, I'm looking forward to there careers :thumbup CHICAGO ? Pitcher Chris Volstad, the Marlins' No. 1 draft pick from Palm Beach Gardens High School, will sign a contract Thursday that includes a $1.6 million bonus. "That's fair. It's fine," Volstad said of the bonus. "Everything's good. I'm ready to go."Volstad, a 6-foot-7 right-hander, had a physical Tuesday and will report Friday to the Marlins' rookie Gulf Coast League team, which plays its games at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter. "I think my home is probably closer to Roger Dean than the (team) hotel," Volstad said. Marlins General Manager Admin Beinfest is eager to see Volstad begin his pro career. "Being local, it won't be a huge change for him with the heat, but there will be a change in terms of playing baseball everyday,'' Beinfest said Tuesday. "We just want him to get acclimated, get stronger and do the things he's been doing. "He's very mature, very polished for a high school pitcher. We were very impressed with that." Volstad was the 16th overall pick in last week's amateur draft. A signing ceremony is scheduled for Thursday at Dolphins Stadium, where the team's other two first-round draft picks ? left-handed pitcher Aaron Thompson of Second Baptist High in Houston and right-hander Jacob Marceaux of McNeese State ? also are expected to sign.
