Buehrle's zinger: Cub uses spitter

June 17, 2005

White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle said Thursday that one of the Cubs' pitchers cheats -- perhaps by using an illegal substance -- during an interview on WSCR-AM (670).

The subject came up during a discussion of Los Angeles Angels reliever Brendan Donnelly, who was caught with pine tar in his mitt.

''I don't want to get too many people in trouble, but I think there are a lot of people who may use something out of the ordinary, even if it's a spitball,'' Buehrle said.

''You see a lot of guys licking their fingers off the mound, which is legal, but when they act like they wipe it on their pants, they're really not wiping it on their pants, they leave their fingers with a little bit of spit to make the ball move a lot. Some of the guys you see out there making the ball move two-three feet, I'd want to check into those guys.''

When asked to name names, Buehrle said: ''I can't get myself in trouble because he's on the North Side. I don't know personally, but I'm just saying from years of experience that he's had success that he very well may be using something.

''Some guys like [sox pitcher Jon] Garland throw a heavy sinker, and a couple of teams this year thought he was cheating because he's having such a good year, and he's one guy I know for sure doesn't.''

Discuss.

Obviously he's talking about Maddux... but whatever. Buehrle is a d-bag anyway.

If that is who he is referring to and that comes out publicly the media firestorm that he will have created will be insane and he will go to the top of the MLB ass clown list.

I always liked Buehrle because he was such a tough pitcher and he just put up the zeros and pitched a good game of baseball.

If he was such a tough guy and trying to be an advocate for a clean game of baseball he should have named the person instead of leaving it up to the media to figure out who it could be...

^^^^^^^^^^^

Buehrle doesnt know for sure that he is doing it, he is just speculating, plus to throw Maddux under the bus publically would probably backfire on Buehrle...unless he had undeniable proof he cant come out and accuse a pitcher like Maddux

Why, just because he hates your real favorite team?? Our team has some douchebags (Everett and Frank to name 2) but I would like to hear a reason why Buehrle is.

Please.....oh and he's on to something here I think. Watch a game Maddux pitches, he goes to the mouth after every pitch.

Maddux got to 300 wins on spit....and spit alone.... :lol :lol :lol

Wow, you put words in my mouth, amazing.....

The man is an all time great, but his velocity has gone down a good 7 to 10 MPH the last few years, and hey who wouldn't try and get an advantage if they can get away with it.

Why, oh why, do the White Sox care so much about the Cubs???

They care just as much about us, but are MUCH smarter and keep quiet about it.

I believe it, can't say I understand it though.

I don't really think our players care either, but they know the fans do and say stuff like this to rile them up more than anything else, whereas the Cubs don't need to do such a thing since they sell out every game anyways.

I know it sounds weird, but that's how it goes.

My real favorite team huh? Don't be an idiot

Sure seems like it with as much as you talk about them in a positive light.

I didnt imply anything...thats just the general sense I got from your post.

And Maddux's velocity is not down a whole 10 mph, thats ridiculous. He always threw in the 80s...so you are saying he is at a consistent 70 mph range clip now?

And if the White Sox consider themselves a championship caliber team...why dont they start acting like it by not doing stuff like this and just lacing em up and playing?

This is yet another reason why Chicago will always belong to the Cubs and the W.S will be second rate.

That might be the stupidest thing I've ever heard. I like the Cubs. I don't feel the need to bash them all the time like some people on here but it doesn't mean they're my "real favorite team". Don't question my loyalties fool.

First of all, if you don't see a decrease in his velocity, your a fool, not me.

He threw in the 88 to 90 range in Atlanta, now he's in the 80 to 83 range. His pitches now have more movement though (hmmm) so he can still get people out (although he is smarter too).

And i'm not on the White Sox, so I can't speak for them, but like I said, this is more about them getting the fans going IMO, as lame as it sounds.

And we will always be second rate because Wrigley Field is a giant bar in a neighborhood full of drunken frat parties. You don't have to be a baseball fan to enjoy a day at Wrigley, but you do to enjoy one at Comiskey.

Great Cub Responses:

"It wasn't me," Maddux said. "Who's Mark Buehrle?"

"Mark, you caught me," Dempster said. "I'm glad in your busy schedule you had nothing else to do but imply that I was using spit on the ball. You must get bored in between the four days off. As a starter I can appreciate that. Now that I'm doing the relieving thing, I don't have time to think of things like that."

Classic.

:lol

Nice response.....seeing as he's a lot better than you are right now.

But nobody knows about Buehrle, he's only 8-1.

And Maddux has 4 Cy Youngs and 14 gold gloves....whats your point?

That the guy who's 5-4 with a 4.68 shouldn't be pompous enough to be ignorning the existance of the guy who's 8-1 with a 2.67

But of course, that defends a White Sox player, so it's wrong.

I like Buehrle he is a top 1/3 pitcher in MLB but Maddux is a sure fire HOF he earned the right to be a pompous ass to Mark Buehrle especially when Buehrle accuses him of cheating.

He NEVER SAID MADDUX'S NAME.....
