. RF Jeremy Hermida, 21, Florida Marlins

.303-13-39-52-17 in Double-A

Baseball America once called him the best high school hitter drafted since Eric Chavez, and finally his breakout 2005 has helped prove it. The power on Hermida's 6-foot-4, 200-pound frame is developing, but you have to love his 64 walks and .452 on-base percentage. He projects to be a lean lefty slugger in the mold of a Shawn Green. The Marlins figure to trade free-agent-to-be Juan Encarnacion, so unless they get a right fielder back, Hermida could become part of the 2005 playoff push up from Double-A ala Miguel Cabrera. That is a little bit of a leap right now for him, but warrants a flier as a reserve in deeper NL-only leagues right now.

ETA: September 2005

Ownership: 1 percent

Long-term: .300-30-100-100-20

BA's Jim Callis had this to say in an ESPN.com chat today:

Browning Nagle (Louisville, KY): Jim, I'm a huge BA fan. What is the timetable for Jeremy Hermida to get the call up for the Marlins? There's not much left for him to do at Double-A..he hits for average and power, draws walks, steals bases and plays good D. Do you think he can step right in and contribute this year to them?

Jim: There's not much more for Hermida to prove in the minors, though he is just 21. If the Marlins could improve themselves in another area by dealing Juan Encarncion, it would be wise to do so and then hand his job to Hermida.
