Renew-Al At Shea?

July 8

New York Post (registration required): " One of the more intriguing possibilities for the new Mets Network next year could be the return of Al Leiter to the organization. Since Marlin manager Jack McKeon has removed the 39-year-old Leiter from Florida's starting rotation, it seems easy to foresee this being Leiter's final season."

This is taken from Pro sports daily marlins rumors. I cant get the rest of the article though. Perhaps we can dump him off to them for something? Heilman (if we toss in a prospect?)

TRADE HIM FOR PEDRO!

Here's the full article...it's actually just about AL coming back to do broadcasting next year for the Mets, not this year.

RENEW-AL AT SHEA?

July 8, 2005 -- One of the more intriguing possibilities for the new Mets Network next year could be the return of Al Leiter to the organization. Since Marlin manager Jack McKeon has removed the 39-year-old Leiter from Florida's starting rotation, it seems easy to foresee this being Leiter's final season.

Leiter - who likely will be pursued to do national games by Fox and ESPN - would be a natural Met candidate, except that last offseason's divorce was somewhat ugly.

However, in parting, Leiter obeyed the first rule of team broadcasters: Never criticize the owners.

Instead, Leiter blamed GM Omar Minaya, not Fred Wilpon or Jeff Wilpon, for his exit south.

When asked this week if he would stand in the way of Leiter's return as a broadcaster, Minaya declined comment.

Leiter, who was at Shea with the Marlins last weekend, also wouldn't go into detail about a return.

"As a whole, I have enjoyed the TV analyst position," said Leiter, who has worked for ESPN and Fox.

When Leiter signed with the Marlins, there were reports that his deal included becoming a Florida TV analyst. Leiter has maintained those stories were false.

Mets Network officials refuse to talk to anyone on the record about anything.

While David Cone confirmed this weekend that he is a candidate to be a Mets Network analyst, Ron Darling is another possibility.

Currently, Darling is calling Washington games on TV. When reached by phone, Darling stressed that he has really enjoyed working for the Nationals. The dilemma in D.C. for Darling is that he only has a one-year deal and doesn't know who is going to buy the team.

"If the Mets are interested, then that is something I would definitely listen to," Darling said.

What is New York native Max Kellerman doing as a regular contributor on Tucker Carlson's MSNBC show? Why was he hosting Monica Crowley's WABC radio program last Saturday?

"I'm interested in analysis and commentary," Kellerman said.

Kellerman is still doing his weeknight 1050 ESPN Radio show. He just appeared on HBO boxing and could have a burgeoning role with the network, so his main interest remains sports.

Last year was a very difficult one for Kellerman, as his Fox Sports Net show, I, Max, was canceled and, much more devastating, his brother and best friend, Sam, was murdered at 29. The fact that he is now busy has helped Max cope.

"I'm going to work every day and that's helped," Kellerman said.

Linda Cohn's new ESPN deal calls for less SportsCenter anchoring and some play-by-play.

Fox Sports Net is having a pre- pregame show prior to Tuesday's All-Star Game in Detroit.

"Just as they do in the Oscars," the network's executive producer, George Greenberg, said.

With a red carpet and players being driven around in '68 Chevys, this show may not do well with Nielsen, but could rate high on the unintentional comedy meter.

ahhh dang. I got my hopes up :(

They don't want him as a pitcher, they want him as a broadcaster.

So do we.

Let him go back to NY. I can't see him replacing any of our guys.

I don't care what he does with his broadcasting career, we need him to focus on pitching well this season

we would be left without a broadcaster next year

He's already come out and said that this was his final year anyways. If he can do broadcast games at the home of one of his favorite teams growing up, then more power to him. :thumbup
