Jays may make run at '08 all-star game

 

DETROIT (CP) - The all-star game is headed back to the American League in 2008, and the Toronto Blue Jays are thinking about making a run at it.

 

The Blue Jays last hosted the all-star game on July 9, 1991, a 4-2 win for the AL. But with the renovations the club is making to its Rogers Centre home, president Paul Godfrey believes the time is right for a return to Toronto.

 

''I am seriously considering bidding for 2008, as it would fit in with the updates of the Rogers Centre,'' said Godfrey.

 

The 2006 all-star game will be hosted by the Pittsburgh Pirates and will remain in the National League for 2007 in San Francisco.

 

Commissioner Bud Selig said earlier Tuesday that the all-star game would head back to an AL city in 2008 and possibly 2009 as well.

 

Hosting the event would give Toronto's economy a nice little boost.

 

The Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau estimates this all-star week's economic impact on the city to be nearly $55 million US.

 

If MLB wants to improve their image in Canada they should do this. BUT if they want to showcase ballparks then they should skip. KC hasn't hosted a game in a very long time.

 

Speaking of future ASGs, I think MLB will unveil next year's ASG logo tomorrow.

They should go to Philly....they have a fantastic ballpark.

The HR derby at that CBP would be pretty awesome in its ridiculousness.

I like the idea of Rogers Centre in 2008. As for Kansas City, the Royals won't go after it until they either build their new ballpark or get the renovations to Kauffman Stadium. 2010 is screaming for either Kansas City or Minnesota.

selig has already announced that the 2008 all star game will be in an AL park...IMO the obvious choice is Yankee Stadium, have they even hosted an all star game since it was remodeled?

What about Anaheim?

 

Even Tampa Bay makes more sense than Toronto to me.

I doubt the Yankees get one until the new stadium is complete.

No new AL stadiums are opening up in the next year or two?

NY isn't even bidding for the All-Star game, nothing but a headache.

i would love it to be in oakland, but that will not happen since it's going to be in San Francisco in 2007...that would be cool to attend consecutive all star games though

Texas hosted one recently as well

Maybe the Devil Rays will go after it for the Trop to attempt to energize their season ticket base.

Well considering that Bud took it away from the Marlins because they play in a dual purpose stadium, I highly doubt Bud would allow Oakland to host it. And didn't Texas just have it a few years ago?
