July 19, 200521 yr The Orioles' pursuit of Marlins righthander A.J. Burnett has expanded to a possible three-way deal in which the Pirates would acquire Marlins third baseman Mike Lowell, Sporting News has learned. Under the proposed trade, the Pirates would send lefthander Mark Redman to the Marlins and first baseman Daryle Ward to the Orioles while receiving Lowell and cash from Florida. The Marlins would wind up with Redman plus the Orioles' package of Class AA righthander Hayden Penn, reliever Jorge Julio and outfielder Admin Bigbie. The Orioles would acquire Burnett and Ward. While the Marlins likely would pay a significant percentage of the approximately $21 million remaining on Lowell's contract through 2007, they also would gain enough financial flexibility to possibly make another move. Burnett, 28, is a free agent after this season, and the Marlins would rather trade him than receive only draft picks in return. Redman, a member of the Marlins' world championship club in 2003, would replace Burnett in the rotation, with Penn remaining in the minors. well that's a bit more like it.... July 19, 200521 yr the move now "arguably" make the team better now....but definetly leaves the team in better shape for next year, how much though depends on how much we have to give the pirates, i can't imagine it would be too much

July 19, 200521 yr Redman is a perfectly serviceable number 3 starter, he's having a good year, pitches well at the pro and i believe is a FA at the end of the year it would be a smart move
July 19, 200521 yr I LOVE this part of the article the best! Penn, though, almost certainly could be flipped for a more established pitcher. The A's have shown interest in Penn, and the Marlins could make him the centerpiece of a multi-player offer for lefthander Barry Zito. A's general manager Billy Beane has been adamant about his desire to keep Zito, but could be emboldened by the recent success of younger starters Rich Harden, Joe Blanton and Dan Haren. Penn would give the A's another young starter to build around You know with Vargas olsen, redman Willis we could just put up an All left rotation LOL
