August 17, 200520 yr Bridgewater, NJ- The Somerset Patriots of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball have announced the signing of former Major League right-handed pitcher Justin Wayne. Wayne has three years of Major League experience with the Florida Marlins from 2002-2004. He pitched in a total of 26 games, striking out 37 batters in 61.2 innings pitched. Wayne also has experience with the Montreal Expos and Los Angeles Dodgers organizations. He was drafted fifth overall in the first round of the 2000 amateur draft by the Expos. He spent the first part of the 2005 season with the Las Vegas 51's, the Dodgers Triple-A affiliate. In 92 career minor league games, Wayne has an ERA of 3.90, allowing 227 runs in 524 innings pitched and 348 strikeouts. Wayne has been activated for the Patriots current series against the Camden Riversharks and takes the roster spot of right-handed pitcher Brad Clontz, who signed with the Marlins at the end of last week. The 2005 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Friday, August 19th when the Patriots take on the Nashua Pride at Commerce Bank Ballpark at 7:05 pm. August 26, 2005 - NEWARK, NJ, August 26?The Newark Bears announced today that the club has signed former Florida Marlins right-handed pitcher Justin Wayne and has also released right-handed pitcher Carlos Castillo. Wayne will be in uniform this evening when the Bears host the Bridgeport Bluefish in a 7:05 PM contest at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The 26 year-old Wayne was a first round selection by the Montreal Expos in the 2000 draft after starring at Stanford University. Midway through the 2002 season he was traded to the Florida Marlins in a deal that saw Cliff Floyd among three players head to Montreal for Wayne, Carl Pavano, Graeme Lloyd and Mike Mordecai. Wayne, a 6?3??, 205 pounder, made his big league debut with the Marlins later in the 2002 season. He made five starts for Florida and posted a 2-3 record with a 5.32 ERA, holding opposing hitters to a .244 collective batting average. After appearing in two games with the Marlins in 2003, Wayne saw action in a major league career-high 19 games with Florida last season, posting a 3-3 record and a 5.79 ERA. This year Wayne appeared in 4 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas before being released. Castillo, the former Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox right-hander, had struggled over the past month-and-a-half, losing his last seven starts in a row. He was winless since July 3rd, a span of nine starts in which he was 0-8 with one no-decision. Overall Castillo was 4-10 with a 6.33 ERA in 16 starts with the Bears in 2005.
