Before the summer, I expected to build up a small nest egg of money in my checking account. However I did not anticipate the rise in gas prices and as a result I have nothing to show for a summer of working full time.

I'm done. I'm only using my car when I have to. From now on it's only for getting groceries, driving more than 20 miles at a time, and bad weather.

How are the rest of you planning on countering this ridiculousness?

I had the same idea. I did save just a bit of money, but not nearly as much as I wanted..

Gas? I am living on campus, and rarely will drive the car more than a couple of miles. I'm leaving for S. Florida tomorrow, so that'll cost a bunch.

I bought a hose and a bucket and a funnel.

I plan to never get gas again and hope my car doesn't stop running. :confused

My truck has become useless, it has a full tank, but this will only be for emergencies or if i have to go up to houston.

Now I walk around campus or use my girlfriends Camry.

I'll spend 30 bucks a week to get gas. *shrugs* And see what happens. I use my car to get to school and work, so, I'm screwed. However, I'll keep my head in the sand and a small antenna in the air for one of those new hydrogen cars to come out in the next 5 years.

You gotta' cope.

Luckily I don't drive much at Elon...can walk everywhere. But man, this s*** is ridiculous

I converted my car to methane power.

Pretty easy for me. I don't have a car, so I don't buy gas.

Public transportation to and from work, bicycle everywhere else. And not just for short trips; I mean Hollywood Blvd. and the Turnpike out to Pembroke Lakes Mall and back trips. North Miami to Ft. Lauderdale airport and back trips.

If I keep driving I'll be spending 35 dollars a week, and that's IF gas stays at right under $3.00

35 times 52 weeks in a year is 1820 dollars, out of maybe 10,000 that I'll make working. That's completely vile.

Well I"m definitely mooching off other people's rides..

and/or not using my car for extended periods of time...

Gas prices will right themselves in a couple of weeks, once the reserve is tapped into.

Good luck with hydrogen. Maybe we'll see one by the year 2025 and it'll be like $250,000.

same goes for me although thankfully im only getting to $25 a tank now (well last saturday night). it still hurts like a bitch to see the prices continue to skyrocket.

I hate to be Chicken Little because it's not my style, but you're probably wrong. Gas will never go back down under 2.00 and in the next 5 years it will be totally non cost-efficient to own a car.

Get used to it now.

Oh no, I didn't mean like it was before...I meant gas will even out once the reserves kick in. I don't expect it to remain above 3 for 'too' long (maybe a couple months, if that).

Are you kidding me?

Europe has been paying $5, 6, 7, 8 for a gallon for years and they're not nearly as wealthy as us. Also, their population centers are more compacted and they still need cars so Americans will definitely need cars. No need to be a wet blanket. Maybe now people will realize they don't need a 75 seat 4x4 SUV for a family of three and a dog, and will instead get a 5 seat sedan that's far more practical. Also, I'd expect diesel to make a huge emergence as the gas mileage is absolutely unbelievable and the performance isn't that much different for the average shlub.

  • Author

Well the definition of wealth in Europe is different because of the nature of what they are taxed and what their governments provide. You know this though.

Yeah, true, because that's what actual automakers have been working on. The Dodge Charger was supposed to be hydrogen, but too many people whined about it, so they changed their mind. What a kick in the pants that must be. Also, Ford is working along with tOSU to get a working, efficient hydrogen model engine going.

What do you suggest the alternative energy source be, since you're the engineer in this group?

As of right now, our options are limited. We've got solar, wind, hydrogen, wood, fuel cells and ethanol. Ethanol and hydrogen are our best bet and it's why the car companies are going that way. As long as these autos are mass produces they won't end up costing "250,000," although in 2025 dollars 250,000 might be cheap!

I bought a hose and a bucket and a funnel.

You know the horse eats the food on the other end. You dont need the funnel unlike gas engines.

:whistle

I moved closer to work. Sure am glad my Monte Carlo gets 32 MPG on the open road
