September 16, 200520 yr I was reading the sports page today and i see this poll that i can't beleive.... the question: Which south florida sports are you most interested in right now. Miami Dolphins 50% Florida Marlins 22% UM Footaball 18% Miami Heat 10% were in the middle of a playoff race and these are the kinda numbers the city councell see's and we wonder why they won't help with stadium money....

I know people that their life is the Dolphins, but they still love the Marlins and attend 10+ Marlins games and own season tickets

In fact, I'd say that 22% putting the Marlins first is pretty encouraging for the team. As is this blurb from the Marlins' website: Playoff fever: Team president David Samson is pleased with the high number of season ticket renewals for 2006 and interest in 2005 playoff tickets the club is getting. "We've never had this many renewals this early," Samson said. As part of a season renewal push, fans were encouraged to get their 2006 tickets by Sept. 4 to secure their 2005 playoff strip. Should the Marlins make the playoffs this season, the team expects to fill 65,000 seats during each home game at Dolphins Stadium. Samson says the number of prime seats left for the postseason is dwindling quickly. September 16, 200520 yr The problem with that poll is that it only allows you to pick one team. Most people like more than one team. But face it, nationally football is more popular than baseball. A lot of people would pick football if they could only have one sport but that's not realistic. A better poll was one conducted in 2002 by the South Florida Business Journal that asked people what teams they considered themselves fan of. "Respondents were asked which teams they follow as loyal fans. They were allowed to name more than one team." "The Miami Dolphins led the pack at 58 percent." "the Marlins were chosen by 50 percent of respondents" This was 2002, Loria's first year when people thought the team wasn't going to compete anytime soon. Well before the World Series win. It is simply the in-thing to say the Marlins don't draw (which they don't) even though many other teams dont as well. Just like its the in-thing to say the Marlins will slash payroll...but the Tigers won't?

Tigers - Have never been in the pennant race all year Indians - Flat out stunk at the beginning and are now hot and rolling (and fans are now showing up). Reds - Were eliminated from the pennant chase on opening day Pirates - Were eliminated from the pennant chase on opening day. Please save the tired excuses of (1) 1998, (2) those teams are more established, and (3) and attendance growing up 5% each year (whuppty-dam-do). How does that explain Arizona, who is younger than the Marlins, won 1 WS, had a fire sale, lost some 100+ games last year, but have never drawn less than 2.5 million - a figure we've only went over once - in their entire history? Want to guess how much the Marlins would draw today if they went 110+ losses? The fact is this the Marlins have no business being in the lower rung attendance neighborhood with those teams with the competitive (albeit frustrating) talented team that they have put on the field.

Want to guess how much the Marlins would draw today if they went 110+ losses? Well Arizona isn't going to draw 2.5 million this year. They are at 1.8 and are tracking about half a million attendees behind last year. The 98 fire sale was the second setback the Marlins had. The 94 player strike was the first which affected the Marlins and almost every other big league club. The Diamonbacks weren't even around at that time. They didn't have to rebuild off of that. Hey and guess what, the diamondbacks began play in a brand new, downtown, baseball only, retractable roof stadium. Sound familiar? The Marlins play in a suburban, football stadium with crummy sightlines, a constant threat of rain and unbearable heat and humidity. Phoenix is also a a market of 4.538 Million people whereas Miami-Ft. Lauderdale is slightly smaller at 4.243 Million Not exactly a fair comparison.
September 17, 200520 yr You got me on the new stadium from the start bit and props to you. However... 1-OK, so they won't draw 2.5 million (sounds like nitpicking to me), but they're still going to draw 2 million, along with 21-22 other teams, which is the standard respectable number, something we're not going to do, while hanging out in the low rent district of 28 out of 30. I say we finish out at 1,850,000 (7% jump) this year and we stop taking baby steps and better get over 2 million next year. We're talking about the most successful period in the franchises history with 3 straight winning (and competitive) seasons. I know people are tired of it, as long as the attendance is low, the talk of moving, lack of $$$, etc. will always be there as a cloud hanging over the team. 2-Actually the South Florida area has some 5 million people (D-2.1+/-, B-1.6+/-, PB-1.3+/-), because Palm Beach is part of the Tri-County South Florida area, regardless of what the US Census says. And based on all the comments on this board about the "fan base" being in Broward and Palm Beach, I find it kind of humorous that PBC is not included when wants to make South Florida look smaller than it is. One hour to Game Time! Go D-Train!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
