Purely speculation, but the Angels seemed to be pretty heads up on when the runner was taking off, so you could make a case that they probably had a few of the Yankees signs, so Bernie missing the hit and run could simply be because the Yankees changed up the signs half-way through the game and Bernie either forgot or didn't know. If anything, it's easier to miss a sign at the college and professional level than it is in little league or high-school, simply because of the gamesmanship that goes on at the higher levels...
