Luongo talks about signing long-term

Featured Replies

Did anyone listen to the Roberto Luongo Show on 560?

They took calls and this one guy basically ripped into Luongo for a good 2-3 minutes about not taking the 4 year deal and instead opting for the 1 year deal with less money and he's worried Luongo won't be back and they had to cut the guy off he was ripping into Luongo so bad saying he was a season ticket holder and said it was insulting and whatnot.

So Louie replies saying he loves South Florida, it's a great place to live, all that good stuff and then he says the dreaded "but..." and starts talking about how he wants to be on a competitive team every year and he wants to be playing for the Stanley Cup every single year, then he said he isn't worried about taking less money with this 1 year deal because he can easily make it back in free agency this offseason and talked about how he doesn't want to commit himself to a team that has missed the playoffs 4 straight years like the Panthers.

It's not like any team will be able to outbid us in the offseason under the new salary cap so getting more money from another club isn't an issue, so basically as long as we make the playoffs and put a competitive team on the ice, Louie should be staying a Panther.

Also, the Roberto Luongo Show was live from Doris' Italian Market in Coral Springs and 30 minutes before the show Louie was signing autographs, I got a puck and my Panthers hat signed :thumbup .

Funny you posted this. I was going to post something regarding Luongo's contract status and why he isnt signed long term with us. He is the rock of our team and it should be built around him. BTW I was @ South Florida Hockey today getting some equipment which happens to be in the same shopping center as Doris Market. Stopped in and got to see Luongo aswell. Good stuff!

I would have gone but because of work, I wasn't able to. Any pics?

About his contract... yea... I am a little worried. Let's hope the Cats make it to the playoffs this year. Louie is definitely the rock of this team.

Do you play in any leagues in South Florida?

I'm in one of the leagues at Incredible Ice.

Sorry, don't got any pics... I didn't realize I left my camera at home until I was on the Sawgrass and it was too late to turn around.

I'm not liking the sound of this.

Luongo should be (and I think deserves to be) the highest paid player in the league, but I also think that he deserves a lot better than the current incarnation of the Panthers, even in the new NHL, the offense doesn't look exactly imposing, or for that matter, even potent.

The Panthers offered him a max contract for 4 or 5 years but he turned it down and opted for the 1 year deal instead, so it's obviously not about the money because he knows he will get a max contract pretty much anywhere he plays, he just wants to play for a winner.

If we make the playoffs, I don't see any reason why he wouldn't sign long term with us.

5 years $25 million is not a max contract.

Florida didn't offer the max....they offered 5 years at $25 mil...Luongo was asking for 5 years at $28mil...you'd think the gap was small enough to come to an agreement, but Keenan offered the deal in the 11th hour...Luongo felt pressured and didn't want to rush into any decisions. Keenan handled the negotiations with Roberto very poorly. If he went about offering that deal in another manner, I get the feeling they would have worked out a deal, but Keenan is Keenan and he insists on intimidation-esque tactics....

He better get the deal done one way or another...or his head will be hanging from the rafters at the Bank.

I think that we will resign Luongo. I mean, we have the cap room, our offense will only get better as the rust wears off. We certainly have the firepower to have a quick strike offense. As well as one that could score 4 goals a game. I am more happy about the fact that we have played a sound defensive game for the most part. That is the first step to a winning team is protecting the goalie. And I am glad Thursday night happened because the team needed a bit of a wakeup call that, even without their big stars, teams can beat you quickly and decisively. And besides, we are off to our best start in years, its a nice feeling. Now, if we are in February and the offense isn't doing anything, I would be a wee bit worried, but its still OCTOBER. We haven't even played game 6 yet. We have 76 more games to go in this young hockey season.

Luongo will sign because for one thing, Keenan did follow through on the promise to upgrade the defense for Luongo. Secondly, the veteran prescense is really starting to kick in. On Thursday night, I will tell you why we lost. It was faceoffs, the Bruins soundly beat us on Thursday night. But thats ok, cause if we only lose the faceoffs once out of every five games, that is a pretty damn good ratio.

used to at incredible. ive been playing in a few roller hockey leagues for a year now over at the Sports Mall and in and outdoor league over at Coconut Creek which is kinda lame. ive been enjoying playing roller hockey alot lately thats why i havent played ice recently.

FWIW, the Panthers are tied for dead last in the league in goals scored with 10, it's not like the other teams are being affected by "rust," the Blue-Jackets also have 10, but they're without Rick Nash, who happens to be a 40 goal a season machine.

And the Panthers lead the league in fewest goals against with 8 and goals against average at only 1.60, in second place is Ottawa with Hasek who isn't even close at 2.25. We have given up the fewest goals in the entire NHL.

I just don't think the Jokinen and Niewy are working well on the same line especially with Jokinen being on the wing, he's basically non-existant there, they need to be split up. I'd like to see:

Horton-Jokinen-Olesz

Roberts-Nieuwendyk-Huselius

Gelinas-Stumpel-Kolnik

Weiss-Gratton-Hagman

Okay, I agree with TSwift now :lol .

In all fairness, three of our big offensive guys were out tonight. But that was no excuse for the piss poor forecheck.

I was at the game, and let me say, that was quite possibly the worst performance I have ever seen in person. Sure the refs appeared to screw the Panthers on a few calls, but getting outshot 21-4 in the second period? Come on, there's no defending that...

Luongo stopped more shots in 2 periods than the Panthers took in 3. Wow.

Well you can't really blame the guy because its been years since ownership has even attempted to put a winning product on the ice. HOWEVER under these new salary cap rules, I think ownership will (and in some ways has) find ways to put a winning product year in and year out from here on out. And if thats the issue, I think Luongo might be wise to stay here because this team, with all of its talent, is destined to make some kind of playoff run again sooner than later.
