Dodgers notes: Beinfest might fit in Dodgers' plans By Tony Jackson, Staff Writer The man on the other end of the most controversial trade Paul DePodesta made in his two seasons as general manager of the Dodgers might be the man who ultimately replaces DePodesta. Two sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity said Florida GM Admin Beinfest, who on July 30, 2004, sent Brad Penny, Hee-Seop Choi and a minor leaguer to the Dodgers for Paul Lo Duca, Guillermo Mota and Juan Encarnacion, has a strong interest in the job. A former All-City shortstop at Chatsworth High, Beinfest still spends much of his offseasons in Southern California. The only question now is whether the Dodgers are interested in him. The club issued a statement Wednesday that shed no light on its ongoing search for a GM. "There are a number of highly qualified candidates for the general manager's position and no shortage of people who have expressed interest," the statement read. "Although this remains a confidential process, we are making considerable progress." Beinfest would seem just what Dodgers officials are looking for. He is young (41), he apparently wants the job badly enough that he probably would take it at less than a bank-breaking salary, and he has a proven track record. In 2003, his second season as GM, Beinfest built the Marlins into World Series champions. His key move that year came on May 11, when with the blessing of owner Jeffrey Loria he replaced manager Jeff Torborg with septuagenarian Jack McKeon. The Marlins were hit with a hefty fine by the commissioner's office because they didn't interview minority candidates, but Loria's and Beinfest's conviction that McKeon was the man they wanted paid off when he quickly changed the club's collective attitude, approach and results. While the affable McKeon got most of the attention that October, it was Beinfest who during that season added key players Ugueth Urbina, Lenny Harris, Chad Fox, Rick Helling and Jeff Conine. Beinfest also cemented his reputation as a no-nonsense Advertisement type with a week to go in the 2005 season, when he responded to critical public comments by pitcher and free-agent-to-be A.J. Burnett by telling Burnett to leave the club and not return - a move that was in stark contrast to the Dodgers' handling of the explosive Milton Bradley over the past two years. Beinfest is signed through 2007. But a source close to Beinfest said Beinfest long has aspired to a job on the West Coast, closer to home, and that if the Dodgers requested permission to interview him the Marlins surely wouldn't stand in his way. It remains unclear, though, whether the Dodgers have sought such permission. Two messages left by the Daily News on Beinfest's cell phone Wednesday went unreturned. Dessens declines: Dodgers reliever Elmer Dessens declined his $1.3 million mutual option for next season, his agent said. The Dodgers had elected to exercise the option, which means they now must pay a $250,000 buyout, but Oscar Suarez informed assistant general manager Kim Ng on Wednesday night of his client's desire to test the free-agent market. Suarez said the veteran right-hander is open to returning to the Dodgers next season if an agreement can be reached on a new contract. Dessens, 34, was 1-2 with a 3.56 ERA in seven starts and 21 relief appearances in 2005 while making $1.3 million. What I found more interesting is that Joe Carpozzi is still working at the Palm Beach Post. Industry rumors and a source close to the organization have often mentioned Carpozzi as the next extraterrestrial beat reporter for the Boca Raton-based National Enquirer.

I dont think the team would be able to find such an adequate replacement
