November 4, 200520 yr Theo may not settle just for GM position By Jeff Horrigan Friday, November 4, 2005 - Updated: 06:20 AM EST With several organizations extending feelers through intermediaries, it appears former Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein may not be out of work for long, if he so chooses. Epstein, whose contract with the Sox expired on Monday, contemplated taking some time off before looking for further employment, but potential employers appear poised to find him first. Epstein could not be reached for comment, but he is believed to be mulling a scenario that would result in him hooking on with another team in an advisory role for a year before returning to a full-time position after next season. However, several sources throughout Major League Baseball indicated yesterday that he could be offered a position above GM in another organization. The sources say Epstein could land the position of president for one of the ownership groups seeking to purchase the Washington Nationals, or with the Los Angeles Dodgers or even the Texas Rangers. Epstein could get a job offer similar to that of the Detroit Tigers? Dave Dombrowski, who is the team?s president and general manager. Meanwhile, it?s no secret that the Dodgers made contact through an intermediary earlier this week about their vacant GM job, but Epstein relayed word that he didn?t plan to entertain any offers until next week because he felt a responsibility to help the Sox? baseball operations staff prepare for the upcoming general managers? meetings in California. The Red Sox are expected to be represented by Epstein?s former assistants: Jed Hoyer, Ben Cherington, Peter Woodfork and Craig Shipley. However, once the meetings begin Monday, the former GM is expected to entertain calls or visits from/with other teams. Epstein, who said that he is comfortable taking a year off, said he will at least listen before making any decisions. Epstein made it clear during Wednesday?s press conference at Fenway Park that he is not burned out and that he plans to find work soon, preferably within the game. [continue] ?I am not burned out,? he said. ?I have tremendous passion for the game. I have a tremendous dedication to the game. . . . I work hard, but I enjoy it and I?m not all burned out.? Meanwhile, another scenario would be if Admin Beinfest becomes a serious candidate for Dodgers GM, it would open up the GM position with the Florida Marlins. The Colorado Rockies may also be eying Epstein for a leadership position. Those aren?t the only possibilities. Former Sox assistant GM Josh Byrnes was named GM of the Arizona Diamondbacks last week, while Toronto Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi and Oakland Athletics GM Billy Beane are all close friends of Epstein?s, which could lead to a consultant position of some sort before he seeks another GM job. If none of those come through, the New York Mets could even seek him out as an adviser or television analyst. ?Theo is likable enough and bright enough that he can handle anything,? another GM said last night. Definitely that could be interesting. I personally wanna keep beinfest but, it would be interesting.
November 4, 200520 yr Honestly, I'm not sure how great a GM he was. I think a lot of people could have done what he did with the second highest payroll in baseball. And that Boston bullpen was pretty crappy.
November 4, 200520 yr Theo isn't coming to the Marlins. You're living in a pipe dream if you think otherwise
November 4, 200520 yr Honestly, I'm not sure how great a GM he was. I think a lot of people could have done what he did with the second highest payroll in baseball. And that Boston bullpen was pretty crappy. It wasnt crappy when we won in 04. And he made alot of non big money moves. Besides Schilling and Renteria, alot of his best moves didnt not involve alot of money... http://www.marlinbaseball.com/forums/index...ndpost&p=986978 And he is going to take a year off and do social work.
November 4, 200520 yr And he made alot of non big money moves. Besides Schilling and Renteria, alot of his best moves didnt not involve alot of money... Just curious, because I don't really know because I don't follow the Red Sox closely, but aside from going with the club-house guys like Kapler, and stumbling on Ortiz (which you could blame the Yankees for passing on because Steinbrenner wanted him badly, Cashman said no), what did he do that he could have done with, oh say, the Royals or Rockies? Hansen was probably his best draft-day move and that only happened because teams like the Marlins made take it or leave it offers that were left, meaning big money teams could take a wait and see approach with him on draft day. Schilling and Foulke were his big moves for the '04 title and they both were due in large part to a large payroll. Manny, Pedro, Damon, those guys were left over; so what non-money moves did he make that really paid off?
November 4, 200520 yr It's not just signing free agents, but being able to keep talent after they've developed into stars.
November 4, 200520 yr How about cutting Theo a little slack. The pressure to win in Boston is enormous. Second only to New York. He can't take a squirt without someone writing about it. What he did in this pressure cooker can't be overlooked. The guy did a fantastic job. And after doing a fantastic job he gets cheaped. Does he react like a jerk? No, he reacts like a guy who has been down this road many times (which he has not). I'd say he is a class act and that John Henry is going to wish he hadn't been such a piker. For Chrissakes John, he earned the money. You drop millions on bums that don't give a rats ass about anything but themselves. Theo comes along and does an absolute supurb job and you cheap him. Whoever finally gets Theo Epstein is going to get one of if not THE best GM's around. We should be so lucky to land him.
November 5, 200520 yr Beinfest has been very good so far, hopefully he doesnt leave but if he does i will have to go after Theo if i were Loria.
November 5, 200520 yr I seem to recall the "Nomar" moves working out pretty well. Adding O. Cabrera & Doug Mienkt?#@iewtc definately helped propel the Sox to the World Series.
