December 4, 200520 yr Maybe we should just give him away and let the other team's GM kick Beinfest in the crotch. So, at the end of the day, for Brad Penny, Hee Seop Choi and Bill Murphy we'll have Jesus Delgado and either Anderson Hernandez or Victor Diaz. :plain But go back further and for Matt Mantei, Hee Seop Choi and Bill Murphy we'll have Delgado and Hernandez/Diaz. Doesn't sound that bad now. You can spin it however you'd like. Given the context of your reasoning, I'd think that would make it worse because Mantei's stats as a closer were pretty crazy when he was traded to Arizona, so either way we'd give up the best player in the deal and come away with a whole lot of nothing.
December 4, 200520 yr It's almost as if 'Marlins' is not a team name, instead it is a name given to a collection of randomly selected prospects. This team won't even come close to resembling last season's team and that makes me sick.
December 4, 200520 yr How much value do you think LoDuca has? He's a .280 hitter with no power, patience or defense. Even at catcher, there are better alternatives. The Mets and other teams realize this. Not to say I don't disagree with the decision to accept some of these offers.

Well, considering that Molina or Hernandez (who, statistically, are comparable) are getting offers of 3/$24, compared to LoDuca's 2/$12...I'd say he has sizeable value, at least better than a player who projects as a utility man.

I don't think the Mets care about their contracts. As for other teams, they'd happily pay the extra $2M for the younger player with fewer health concerns, better power and arguably better overall game.

And if the Mets don't care about the money they spend, doesn't that speak more to the value of LoDuca since they're willing to pay him and give up players to attain him?
December 4, 200520 yr LoDuca is one of the clutchest players in BASBEALL. come on, what does that even mean?? Give me examples. He was, at most, the third most clutch hitter on his own team. How do you measure clutch? How did his clutchness help this year? His "leadership" and "clutchness" are these mythical attributes that don't really translate to wins. I love P-Lo, but his "clutchness" is not the best way of defining his value.

Unless you are suggesting Hernandez or Molina will suffer a career threatening injury or decline in their prime years. No, the Mets want him for the same reason they want a lot of players. Public relations. LoDuca was born in Brooklyn and is one of the most respected players in the game. Something that outside of the state of Florida and the Los Angeles metropolitan area, few clubs care about when considering to add a productive player to a championship contender.
December 4, 200520 yr Trading lo Duca, unlike trading Castillo, makes alot of sense. He is older, overpaid, and aside from calling a very good game, is a mediocre overall player. If you look at his second half stats and injury history its apparent he doesn't keep himself in the best shape to boot. I'd love him to anchor our young staff but we need someone more productive per their contract behind the plate.
December 4, 200520 yr A LoDuca trade wouldn't upset me nearly as much as the rest of the deals, except that we have no good catching prospects in the minors & Treanor's not a starting catcher.
