December 4, 200520 yr Gustavo Cisneros (born in 1946) is a Latin American media king and is among the world's 100 richest men according to Forbes magazine. Cisneros' $4.6 billion fortune comes from his many media, telecommunications and beverage companies, most notably his large stake Univisi?n. One of his other major holdings is Venevisi?n, the main television provider in Venezuela. Fearing nationalization of his television stations, Cisneros is a vocal opponent of Hugo Ch?vez in Venezuela and Fidel Castro in Cuba, with whom Ch?vez has become increasingly aligned. There is no love lost on either side; Chavez calls Cisneros' TV station one of the "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse." Cisneros' stations in Venezuela chose not to air footage of the public's demonstrations in support of Chavez during the coup attempt of 2002 against him. At this point, more than 80% of Cisneros' operations are based in the United States. With recent consolidation of Ch?vez's power, Cisneros and his company has become less vocal in its opposition inside Venezuela. Cisneros is an advocate of Free Trade Area of the Americas, a proposed agreement to eliminate or reduce trade barriers among all nations in the American continents (except Cuba).
December 4, 200520 yr The more I read about this guy the more I like him. This is exactly the kind of owner the Marlins should have.
December 4, 200520 yr my question is why is his name being mentioned? Good question if I understood it correctly. (I assume that Cisneros is interested in buying the team). I suppose you can spint it in a number of ways. Maybe they're doing it to put pressure on Loria. It shows that Cisneros would have the money to make up the $30 million gap. If Loria sells the team to Cisneros the Marlins would definitely not move. This will make Loria look very selfish - he's moving the team because he doesn't have $30 million to close the gap (if the gap really is that low) and is unwilling to sell the team to someone that would clearly be able to keep the team in So. Florida. Who knows. But, you're right. There was a purpose to the leak. Is there any offer that can make Jeffrey Loria sell the team to him? Nope. It's up to Loria. But I hope public pressure gets to him and he sells the team to Cisneros. Cisneros would represent Miami very well - up and coming Latin businessman buys the Marlins to play in the Gateway to the Americas. Cisneros would market the Marlins in Latin America and would build up the team's brand that way (much like the Yankees' brand).
December 4, 200520 yr Does MLB have a say in the situation not just the Cisneros situation, but , the stadium situation?
December 4, 200520 yr It's up to Loria. But I hope public pressure gets to him and he sells the team to Cisneros. Dreamer. The exact opposite will be the effect.

But that's what I hope. Of course this will be taken by most as furthering my unofficial title as chief apologist for the current ownership, but my years in business tell me the way to get someone to do what you want is to take the pressure OFF him, NOT put pressure ON him. All you do is push him into a corner like Ariolla did trying to deliver the Marlins to his constituency.
December 4, 200520 yr Is there any offer that can make Jeffrey Loria sell the team to him? Certainly not when this successful businessman realizes he doesn't have to overwhelm Loria now as the city will do and has done everything in their power to allow him to wait for a potential bargain sale of the team later.

However, Loria will look pretty bad if he prefers to move the team and crush the hopes of Marlins fans in So. Florida over "$30 million" when he could sell the team to someone that will keep the team in So. Florida and fill the funding gap. He looked like a villain in Montreal and will look even worse after he's done here. That will be two franchises he destroys and two fan bases he crushes in less than a decade. Maybe someone can make him realize how selfish he's acting - public pressure might help. But, you're probably right.

December 4, 200520 yr Is there any offer that can make Jeffrey Loria sell the team to him? Everyone has their price. Now whether Cisneros would be willing to offer a price attractive enough to get Loria's attention is a whole other matter.

Now whether Cisneros would be willing to offer a price attractive enough to get Loria's attention is a whole other matter. He would be crazy to. As long as he can keep "friends" with local officials, he has a solid chance of buying the club at a bargain price later.
