September 1, 200322 yr My guess at the eleventh hour is the Pirates trade Stairs to the Marlins and keep Sanders. The money for them is a wash, Sanders is hot, and a full-time player, Stairs is older, not a FT player and hence more expendable. Just a wild-a** guess. (Not even mentioning Jeff Conine but I still think he's the right guy)
September 1, 200322 yr Regardless of age of playing status both players dont figure into the Pirates plans for next season. I'd have to think both are available.

September 1, 200322 yr I'm not sure I like the idea of a 39-year old player helping us in the "long run." I like Conine, I'd love to have him down the stretch, but he's gotta start declining sometime, and it's gotta be soon. It's only logical.
September 1, 200322 yr Its VERY doubtful that we get Conine. The O's made it clear that they wanted to keep him after we rejected their offer.

Sham you may be right although at some point the team implodes from lack of talent if you trade both guys right now, a nightmare for ticket sales next year.

He only getting better with time...If he is aquired he will be Lees' replacement next season...He is also considerably cheap.
September 1, 200322 yr Lemme guess this is what beinfest will say today or tommorow; reporter:so beinfest why didn't you make a move? Beinfest:well i think our club is just fine like this there's no need for changes. Hopefully we get a good player of waivers.
September 1, 200322 yr Yep. The only reasons for them to keep these guys around is if they dont want to be Tiger-horrible. It all depends on the balls of management.
September 1, 200322 yr Yeah, but he's 39 and he plays better then he did 6 years ago. He only getting better with time...If he is aquired he will be Lees' replacement next season...He is also considerably cheap. I happen to agree with you that Conine at 39 is a heckuva stud, plays like he's 33 but he isn't cheap. He'll be cheaper next year than Lee for sure but if I remember he's due $4.5 mil in 2004. Replacing Lee in 2004 with Conine would save upwards of $2 million but it isn't like he's a $500k-$1 mil player.
September 1, 200322 yr no news on the actual AP wire....(not just espn) *presses refresh* still nothing new
September 1, 200322 yr Theres also the possibilty the clubs hold off on the announcement of a trade to keep other WC contenders off balance. Probably not as likely for this deadline because so few players are available.
September 1, 200322 yr or Lowell? We are suppose to give him a multi year contract so it wont be him.

Considerably cheaper then Lee is what I meant to say...If we don't get Conine by tonight then he will never be a part of this club again.
September 1, 200322 yr yes^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Willis#1, I wouldn't get your hopes up too high. Beinfest could disappoint you resulting in you waiting here for nothing.
