Posted September 2, 200321 yr Don't know if it's been posted yet, just thought I'd throw this in. Looks like Reggie Sanders and Vander Wal were the first targets: (from USA Today)The Marlins and Orioles beat the September trade deadline, 12:01 a.m. Monday, by half an hour, working quickly after a claim by Los Angeles kept outfielder Reggie Sanders from going to Florida, and Milwaukee opted to hold on to outfielder John Vander Wal.
September 2, 200321 yr Interesting. Thanks. As a pre-season basher of the FO, I have turned the corner. And, regardless of the process and initial last-minute decisions after Mike got hurt, I think the FO did great getting Conine. It's like Loop said, "hard to put in words the feeling we have getting Conine."
September 2, 200321 yr yea Sanders was the first choice they said it. Second on the Marlins list was scott spiezo from the angels.
September 2, 200321 yr scott spiezo? according to what source? sanders and vanderwal were cheaper options...but really only for this season. conine does a couple of things...he is here through 2005. he is a fan favorite. he can still produce. he was costly, but thats baseball.
September 2, 200321 yr Author I heard Spezio's name mentioned too....can't remember where. Maybe on the Fox pregame show from Craig Minervini?
September 2, 200321 yr correct me if I'm wrong (and theres no doubt someone will on this board) but I believe Saunders was already "claimed" by LA before Lowell's injury. Add to that Littlefield's comments the night before that he was done trading. He has a fan base to contend with and season-ticketholders who were infuriated with his deals. I don't believe serious consideration was ever paid to Saunders, it was probably more of a courtesy, "just checkin' to see if you changed your mind" kinda call.
