February 22, 200620 yr Bowen invited to USA camp Web Posted: 02/21/2006 12:00 AM CST Johnny Ludden San Antonio Express-News http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/basketball/nba/spurs/stories/MYSA022106.4D.bowen.usa.d248e0a.html Bruce Bowen walked outside Monday morning to pick up his newspaper and was surprised by what else he found on his doorstep. A contract from USA Basketball. The paperwork was a formal invitation for Bowen to participate in USA Basketball's training camp in July in Las Vegas. Only 22 NBA players will be invited to the camp, which will be used to determine the U.S. national team for this summer's World Championships in Japan and the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant and Cleveland's LeBron James are among the other players who have committed for the camp. Bowen wasted no time in signing the contract Monday and mailing it back to USA Basketball. "I've accomplished a lot in my career," Bowen said. "But this is an opportunity to represent my country." USA Basketball isn't expected to announce the complete group of players until March 1. Bowen, who has said all season he would love to be picked, further impressed officials with his enthusiasm last weekend. After traveling from San Antonio to Miami Thursday to be with his family for the All-Star break, Bowen flew back to Houston on Friday to meet with Jerry Colangelo, USA Basketball's managing director. "I didn't really have any questions for him," Bowen said, "because I was just so excited for the opportunity." Between his defense and timely 3-point shooting, Bowen can provide two skills Team USA needs. Bowen, who turns 35 in June, will be one of the oldest players in the camp, but he has proven to be durable, having started 324 consecutive games for the Spurs. "The thing (Colangelo) is trying to do is build a team, and on that team you have superstars and role players," Bowen said. "They're looking for players that don't have to have the ball the whole time, who can continue to cheer on a teammate even though they might not be getting shots. "It's an opportunity for me to do what I do." Horry back: Robert Horry, who has appeared in only four games since Jan. 16 because of a lower abdominal strain, is expected to play tonight. "We're just going to go ahead and play him and see where he's at," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.

February 22, 200620 yr Author team usa needs to build the team like a real team and not an all star team.
February 22, 200620 yr It's great D'Antoni is on the staff but he should have def. been the head coach of this with Pop as his primary assistant. He was a great European coach and his style has been great in the NBA. I would have thought with Coangelo heading this operation up he would have looked Mike's way, but I guess not. Either way I still think we win with K as coach this time around anyway.

Pop runs an European style offense and his staff have their tentacles all over the international basketball circuit. D'Antoni coached over there as The Fan stated. Coach K is just the big name. I really dont think he was the most qualified candidate, but it wont matter if they dont actually put a team out there and not just a glorified all star team.
February 22, 200620 yr I think it is good to have a college guy up front with the NBA coaches with int'l experience as assistants - this allows the knowledge to come through without causing a potential conflict where players and coaches are griping about minutes, rotation, etc based on NBA conflicts/concerns

February 22, 200620 yr who says he doesn't know the rules? they really aren't that difficult .. i think the main thing the head coach has to do is be able to set a rotation, adjust to the flow of the game and in this case lean on thier assistants i honestly would of rather of seen a guy who coaches like Admin bird did - but am liking the way this is starting to structure

February 22, 200620 yr cant we get a real point guard please? They should have Chauncey Billups start. Best point guard in the league not named Nash, who is Canadian.
February 22, 200620 yr I would go with Billups or Chris Paul. Yes, already. You have to have a true point guard in international play.

Chris Paul could be the ideal candidate come the olympics in 2008. He should have been an all star this year as it is. I dont think Jason Kidd would 'get it done' for us in International play, especially not in 2008. World Championships this summer...probably.
February 22, 200620 yr Wade is better than AI, so you have to put him at PG. Wade is not a better PG then AI.....But thanks for trying. AI 7.3 APG, 152 TO Wade 6.8 APG, 162 TO Also, your logic is faulty....why PG??

Dwyane Wade will be 26, barely entering his prime. /end of story
