April 18, 200620 yr espn.com Nationals GM Bowden arrested, charged with DUI Associated Press WASHINGTON -- Nationals general manager Jim Bowden was arrested and charged with driving under the influence while in Florida during his team's series against the Marlins last weekend. The Nationals released a statement from Bowden on Tuesday in which he acknowledged what happened. He said he was arrested Sunday evening in Miami Beach. "I intend to plead not guilty at a future date in a Miami-Dade court. I deeply regret any embarrassment that my arrest may cause the Washington Nationals and Major League Baseball," Bowden said in the statement. "On the advice of legal counsel, I will have no further comment regarding this incident until the court proceedings are complete," he said. Bowden's arrest comes as Major League Baseball closes in on announcing a new owner for the former Montreal Expos. The club was off to the franchise's worst start since 1970 before winning the last two games at Florida to get to 4-9 entering Tuesday night's game at Philadelphia. "I have talked to Jim Bowden about the regrettable incident that took place Sunday night," Nationals president Tony Tavares said. "The Washington Nationals will monitor the situation as it works its way through the court system and will not make any comment or take any action until the legal issues are resolved." Bowden was hired by the team in November 2004 as an interim GM, and Washington went 81-81 in his first season with the club, a 14-win improvement from the 2004 season. His contract was set to expire after last season but was extended for six months. Then, during spring training, his deal was extended through the end of this season. Bowden was the youngest general manager in major-league history when he took the position with the Cincinnati Reds at age 31 in 1992. He was with the Reds until 2003 and then worked for ESPN before being hired by Washington.

April 19, 200620 yr he got beat up by his girl too Miami Beach police popped Washington Nationals vice president/general manager Jim Bowden for DUI, 10 hours after Bowden's team beat the Florida Marlins 7-5 at Dolphin Stadium. Cops also arrested his fiancee, Joy Browning -- on a domestic violence charge. Happened at 2:22 a.m. Monday on South Beach. Officer Michael Iadaresta says Bowden, driving a rental car, blew a stop sign at Ninth Street and Collins Avenue. When cops stopped him five blocks away, he smelled of alcohol, had ''a flush red face, and slurred speech,'' Officer Roger Martinez's arrest report says. Bowden took a field sobriety test but did not perform ''to standard'' and refused a breath alcohol test, the report says. He told police he had a ``couple drinks.'' Bowden, 44, and Browning, 36, had been arguing, cops say, and Bowden had a ``laceration to his right ear and scratches on his left cheek.'' Officer Manuel Valdes told Browning that ''she needed to step out of the vehicle as she was under arrest.'' She refused, Valdes says, and tried to use her cell phone. When Valdes took the phone away, she grabbed for it and smacked his hand -- twice, the report says. Police slapped on the handcuffs and charged her with battery on Bowden and resisting arrest. Browning, a former hairdresser, is an aspiring actress who lives in L.A., according to her manager, Patrick Hart. She landed roles in two independent films that have yet to be released. One is Monster Movie. The other? Lady Killer. Browning plays a psychiatrist. Hart describes her as ''very docile, very sweet'' and says Bowden is a ''super nice guy.'' They are supposed to marry this fall, he adds. ``What a shame.'' Bowden got out of Miami-Dade County Jail at 8:45 p.m. Monday after posting $1,000 bond. Browning spent the night at the Women's Detention Center. She got out at 5:27 p.m. Tuesday on $5,000 bond. Arraignment is May 8 before Circuit Judge William Thomas.
