Posted April 24, 200619 yr CINCINNATI ? (AP) ? The Cincinnati Reds acquired outfielder Cody Ross from the Los Angeles Dodgers for a player to be named Monday, and designated infielder Tony Womack for assignment to the minors. Womack hadn't started since April 14 and was relegated to occasionally pinch-hitting after general manager Wayne Krivsky traded for second baseman Brandon Phillips on April 7. The Reds also put left-hander Eric Milton on the 15-day disabled list and called up right-handed starter Elizardo Ramirez from Triple-A Louisville. Milton had surgery Monday to repair torn cartilage in his left knee. He's expected to be sidelined for three to four weeks. Ross started two games for Los Angeles. He hit a grand slam and a three-run homer during a 13-5 victory over Pittsburgh on April 16, and was designated for assignment the next day. Womack was one of the Reds' main offseason acquisitions under former general manager Dan O'Brien, who traded a pair of prospects to the Yankees for the second baseman/outfielder. The Yankees also sent the Reds $900,000 to cover part of Womack's $2 million salary this season, the last on his contract. O'Brien then gave Ryan Freel a two-year, $3 million contract, and brought Rich Aurilia back on a one-year deal, leaving the Reds with three second basemen. When Krivsky got Phillips from Cleveland in a trade, Womack's role was even more limited. Phillips started all seven games last week and hit .452 with three homers and 17 RBIs.
April 24, 200619 yr actually I knwo that the Womack is old and a bit costly (not really but we are talking about the fish now) but he could actually be pretty servicable for the marlins - CF - could lead off - could play 2nd base if needed - experienced - still has some speed

I'm comfortable with Uggla and Amezega for now, although I wish we would've gotten Phillips when we had the chance...mentioned this in a thread awhile ago.
April 24, 200619 yr - CF - could lead off - could play 2nd base if needed - experienced - still has some speed Not very well. Not well at all. See #1 Um... Okay... So does Eric Reed
April 24, 200619 yr :notworthy Krivsky is the man! In the short time he has been here he has traded for Arroyo, Phillips, and Ross for basically Wily Mo Pena thats it. Now he has got rid of Womack. :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy Cody Ross is prob. gone when Griffey gets back. Wrong. McCracken will be gone.

April 25, 200619 yr - CF - could lead off - could play 2nd base if needed - experienced - still has some speed Not very well. Not well at all. See #1 Um... Okay... So does Eric Reed do the marlins have a CF? do the marlins have a legitimate leadoff hitter? ... (hanley has been awesome but he is NOT a leadoff hitter) do the marlins have people that could put the ball in play when needed? who the hell cares about Eric Reed?

The real problem is Marlins are not going to spend any money so unless the Reds are interested in giving him to us for free, we're not in the market.

Nope, but Womack's not any better than our current options. Unless you overrate the experience factor to stupid levels. Hanley's still a better leadoff hitter and it can't be argued the team or him will improve elsewhere in the lineup. Having a traditional leadoff hitter is only a comforting factor, nothing else. Almost no runners on third base score on the grounders to second and infield pop-ups Womack would put into play. Who cares about a player that doesn't represent a clear improvement over a current asset of ours?
April 25, 200619 yr Hanley is a better leadoff hitter but that is because there isnt another clear option. He can be best utilized as 2 hole hitter ... heck he could even bat 3rd in the lineup but with a decent leadoff guy you would get a lot more out of hanley. and Womack is better than Reed/Abercrombie/Aguila ... who shouldn't even be in the major leagues
April 25, 200619 yr yeah, there goes the Cody Ross deal for us Ross played for the Padres. Not that the Marlins couldn't use him but catcher is probably the only position we don't need to fill.
April 25, 200619 yr I'd prefer to watch Reg/Reed fail miserably than watch a 36+ yr old do just a little bit better, not to mention that Aguila has a decent shot at being a decent 4th OFer and has nothing left to prove in the minors.
April 25, 200619 yr Yet he's successful and is helping the team. Granted we don't have the best depth and could use a solid #6 hitter, but what's the point? We can acquire a better hitter that suits the 6th-spot while keeping Hanley at the leadoff spot, where he's obviously productive and brings far more to the table than Womack or any number of more traditional options. How is Womack better than Reed, Abercrombie and Aguila? For his career, he has a OBP just over .300, slugging percentage just over .350, never was the best defender and steals just 20 bases nowadays. He'll be 37 by the end of the year and his legs, his greatest weapon, are already giving out on him. Abercombie brings you power. Reed better defense. Aguila both although not as much as either of the other two. A .350 slap hitter has value. A .250 slap hitter that plays in the outfield shouldn't even be in the league.
April 25, 200619 yr Abercombie brings you power. Reed better defense nice so if we combine or play both at the same time in CF we might just get a real baseball player im sure four eyes work better at the plate than two so hitting might also get better
April 25, 200619 yr I should have said Abercrombie brings you everything Womack does and power. Reed everything Womack does and better defense. Aguila everything Womack does with a little bit more of both.
April 25, 200619 yr I should have said Abercrombie brings you everything Womack does and power. Reed everything Womack does and better defense. Aguila everything Womack does with a little bit more of both. im guessing that you are just simply basing that on pure "raw" skill that hasnt played above AA (on abercrombie) and I dont know what Reed does that would make him better than Womack except look skinnier. Also there is a reason why Aguila hasnt played and wont play in the near future and if he does it will be simply because Abercrombie and Reed completely suck which im going out on a limb and saying they will Im not saying Womack will make the team much better but it would surely help the team in areas of clear need and it will make the overall scheme work whats your thing with prototypical leadoff hitters? haven't we gone with 2 for a long time and got results? ... there a reason why guys like him and lofton have been around for ages
April 26, 200619 yr Yes, I'm basing that one my estimation of their abilities as much as Womack's terrible career. Just because we don't have an established CFer and a prototypical leadoff hitter doesn't mean a veteran who is medicore in both of those roles helps. Let's put it this way if you give me 9 Derek Jeters, I'm not trading one to get Juan Pierre's bat in the leadoff spot. If a player has shown he can succeed from the spot, well, good! Keep him there and concentrate your efforts on finding a player who brings more to the table than your prototypical leadoff hitter. A Derek Jeter and Matt Stairs is far more valuable than a Juan Pierre and Derek Jeter. Why sacrifice that type of offense from the leadoff spot to be typical? Why sacrifice that option you have in the 6th-hole for something typical? Typical teams don't win pennants. Teams that are above average win pennants.
April 26, 200619 yr yeah, there goes the Cody Ross deal for us Ross played for the Padres. Not that the Marlins couldn't use him but catcher is probably the only position we don't need to fill. David Ross is the catcher, not Cody.
