Shadez has had a slide in batting average worse of all the Ks are starting to add up...maybe a day off would help him...he is one of the most tenacious players I think he is starting to press a bit

Yeah, it's about time several of the regulars got a day off. When is the last time Cabrera, Ramirez and Willingham sat? Or have they yet?

Can anybody think of a similar player, past or present, that reminds you of Hanley? Probably Renteria, unless he fills out like Cabrera thinks he will and hits for more power, then he's probably more like Tejada (who he was compared to when he was signed initially).

Robin Yount played 11 years at SS a shoulder injury brought on his move to CF but he was already 30 y/o by then Yount came up to the majors when he was 18

Jeter averages a healthy 115 whiffs a year. I see no reason why Hanley can't settle into that number as he gains a little more playing time and adjusts to real pitching. He will probably whiff 150+ this year, but I really can see that dropping by a third in coming seasons. He's already showing some walking ability so his eye isn't the problem. I think your 'hitting to right field' issue is solved with age as well. He's still a puppy. He's going to crap on the carpet every now and then.

 

Regardless, I think the Jeter comparisons are pretty outrageous. Jeter isn't a good defender, regardless of the fact the press likes to give him gold gloves, and Hanley has the ability to be a really nice defensive player despite his early inconsistencies. I guess it's up for debate how much you think Hanley will fill out though to balance out the slugging, but I'd wager Hanley has more Jimmy Rollins power then Derek Jeter power. I also don't see Hanley walking 70+ times a year. 50ish seems more realistic.

 

I think Furcal and Rollins are good players to compare him to. Good defensively, .280-.290 hitting, .335-.355 OBP, .420-.450 slugging (12-15 HR), and 30+ SB at a good percentage. I would take that player as my starting SS in a heartbeat, but we'll see. Jeter didn't develop power for a few seasons. We can only hope Hanley fills out and starts hitting 20+ bombs at a .360+ OBP.

Furcal is a dominating defensive presence. Absolutely dominating. I don't know what Furcal you are watching, but I would love for Hanley to get as good as him. Pecota says Furcal saved 20 runs over average defense last year. That's crazy. He's as good as it gets. And not that runs are a good indicator of production, but Rollins is scoring 115+ runs a season for a few years now and is on pace to do it again. I think it'll be tough for Hanley to flat out score more runs then that, but I wouldn't be shocked if Hanley out OBPs him with routine .340-.350ish type years. (Rollins career .327, 04-05 .343).

 

Comparing Hanley to those two is pretty much dead on in my book in pretty much everything, besides the strikeouts which Hanley will whiff more then them. I'd like to see the Marlins lock him up by buying out all his arbitration in a 5/$12-14 million type contract. He's a stud.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I don't think Furcal is the same body-type...as in, Hanley has the potential to truly grow into his frame a little more, and possibly develop a bit more power. Don't you think the Renteria comparisons are accurate?? Great analysis by the way.
