May 6, 200620 yr i'm extremely ignorant when it comes to politics...what exactly does this mean? can they not just introduce the bill again or do they have to wait a certain amount of time? This bill and everything attached to it (including votes) is now dead. All bills are session specific, meaning every bill that was proposed but not voted on concurrently by both houses dies in session. Something like this is called a pocket veto if the executive branch would have done it; since it was the legislative, we simply got tabled.
May 6, 200620 yr It just seems like very unintelligent protocol for both chambers to close at the same time. If the process is Senate --> House, than the House ought to close at a later time than the Senate so that all legislation passed through the House can be discussed. If not, every year there is legislation that is left out for nothing but time's sake.
May 6, 200620 yr I think they screwed the Marlins because they do not like South Florida. I mean it was well timed. It is almost as if it were a conspiracy first the seperation of the Magic and Marlins bill. And then they left us with a huge cliff hanger, this is bull!!!
May 6, 200620 yr The House was all over this. They wanted it Senate managed to make a quasi-filibuster (in effect) by waiting til the last minute to bring it up. that way, they can't be hated for not voting on the subsidy....while at the same time, managing to stop it from passing. I'm going to get some inside info as to what really happened.
May 6, 200620 yr Author maybe that one senator woman who we thought was on our side was part of the time conspiracy

If not, every year there is legislation that is left out for nothing but time's sake. That's not how it works though. Both houses close at the same times because both houses are on the same level as far as what it takes for passing a bill. If a bill originates in the House, it then goes to the Senate and vice versa. Can't close one after the other because that would imply that one is more important than the other.
May 6, 200620 yr maybe that one senator woman who we thought was on our side was part of the time conspiracy yeah she was suspiciously clueless
May 6, 200620 yr Senate approved it but they left it to the last minute....my question is this on the House's agenda when they come back into session or does have to be routed again as a new measure through the senate...if anyone knows for sure please enlighten us
May 7, 200620 yr FYI... The House likely would not have passed the bill. Polls show an incredible amount of taxpayers would not support it. erego, representatives would not have voted in favor. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the Senate never intended to let this bill pass....and the House never intended to pass it if it got past Senate... Just one big BS hype machine.
May 7, 200620 yr look what ch4 news says: it report that marlins new park is dead in the water http://cbs4.com/homepage Marlins Strike Out In Legislature--Again No Funds For Marlins Ball Park In Hialeah Florida House Juat 'Ran Out Of Time' Save It E-mail It Print It (CBS4 News) TALLAHASSEE The Florida Marlins lost again in the Legislature. A bill that would provide a 60 (m) million dollar subsidy to help them build a new stadium in Hialeah died in the Florida House. When the clock struck midnight, the legislative session ended, leaving the Marlins in the dust. The measure (HB 615) had passed on a 20-to-16 vote in the Senate only moments earlier, but time ran out. The Senate voted after a vigorous half-hour debate when opponents said it would be a bad idea to subsidize a professional sports team just minutes after passing an insurance measure that does little to clamp down on runaway property insurance rates.
May 7, 200620 yr I think it's been said that this wasn't overly neccessary for a stadium to be built, just would of sped up the process.
May 7, 200620 yr I really dont think we are ever going to get a new stadium in the state of florida. The marlins are going to be the next expos, I can just see it. It was even a surprise that it was proposed...The Hialeah plan is looking at other avenues of revenue and MLB is also suppose to put in their 2 cents to help resolve the gap issue...but this proposal would have made the new stadium a reality, because the gap would have been reduced to 50 million a couple of all-star games would be able to generate that amount
May 8, 200620 yr There's a slight chance a special session could be called (for other issues) and maybe they can bring this back. The senate was the problem and it seems they got the votes there.
May 8, 200620 yr while politicians all through out florida deserve blame , focusing on north florida politicians exclusively doesnt give an accurate reflection of the problem , many palm beach, broward ,and miami-dade politicans dont favor state funding of any kind for the stadium . It seems like only Republicans from Miami are for the stadium just about everyone else is not for it . I think utlimately the Marlins will get some funding for the stadium but as we all know the answer to our problem can be found locally . Hopefully hialeah gets it done after the city and state have dropped the ball!!!! Btw the Marlins really do need a stadium , sundays game was brutal and it wasnt supposed to be hot but it felt like i was in an oven at times
May 8, 200620 yr Senate approved it but they left it to the last minute....my question is this on the House's agenda when they come back into session or does have to be routed again as a new measure through the senate...if anyone knows for sure please enlighten us If this session is extended into a special session, then all that is needed is for the House to pass the bill as amended. However, if there is no special session which continues to look more and more unlikely than the bill is dead and buried. FYI... The House likely would not have passed the bill. Polls show an incredible amount of taxpayers would not support it. erego, representatives would not have voted in favor. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the Senate never intended to let this bill pass....and the House never intended to pass it if it got past Senate... Weren't paying attention much to the State Congress the past couple of years, eh?
