May 6, 200620 yr The proposed trade between the Mets and Marlins involving David Wright and Dontrelle Willis was recently nixed. Dumb, dumb, dumb - for the Mets. What do you think about the Rox possibly packaging Ian Stewart and Choo Freeman for the D-Train? And at least tell me the Rockies will possibly open their checkbook like the good old days if the right player comes along. -- Jarret McMillan, Phoenix Jarret - I love Dontrelle Willis, his competitiveness, his passion for the game. That said, I wouldn't move Ian Stewart for the left-hander. Stewart has a much better chance of becoming a star in Denver than Willis does of remaining a star, even in the days of Coors Light Field. Besides, I don't see the Rockies in the mix for Willis based on his potential suitors and future salary. If the Red Sox and Yankees lose out on Roger Clemens, the bidding for Willis could get stupid. The Red Sox would have a slight advantage based on the prospects they could offer. In talking to Dick and Charlie Monfort, they have indicated that they add payroll at the trading deadline if the team is contending. However, the key figure will be the attendance. That revenue will play a large role in the type of player, if any, the Rockies add. Ouch...
May 6, 200620 yr most pitchers can't pitch in coors you need to basically be a sinker baller to be good there. the rockies have burned through a couple of "aces" it just doesn't work for them there.
May 6, 200620 yr he started last year off good, had a major slump in the middle, and ended it great. he ended up putting up great numbers but it wasnt like he pitched a gem every night. he'll be fine this season and probably many more seasons.

Actually, I would argue that except for his rough stretch in the middle, nearly every night was a gem. That's what made it so special and why it was so dissapointing for him to lose the cy young.
May 6, 200620 yr They're right about Willis. I doubt he will ever be as good as last year. *Loud game show buzzer sound* WRONG.
May 6, 200620 yr They're right about Willis. I doubt he will ever be as good as last year. Defensive talent behind Willis has dropped markedly this year. That combined with a weak bullpen and inexperienced lineup will translate into a higher ERA and fewer wins. I'm sure we'll see Willis' win total increase again as this team matures and some missing pieces are filled. Give it a few years.
May 6, 200620 yr You have to put yourself in their frame of mind. He's not knocking Dontrelle, just stating that Denver is a far better place to be for a hitter than it is for a pitcher.
May 6, 200620 yr Colorado needs to wise up and load up on strikeout pitchers. Ball in play = bad for Coors.
May 6, 200620 yr Colorado needs to wise up and load up on strikeout pitchers. Ball in play = bad for Coors. It's hardt o be a strikeout pitcher because the ball doesn't move as good.
May 6, 200620 yr the key line there is that they'll open the pocketbooks if they're contending around the trade deadline. Post writers have never shown love to any Marlins, why start with Willis?
