May 24, 200620 yr NFL representative approached president's brother Posted: Wednesday May 24, 2006 10:26AM; Updated: Wednesday May 24, 2006 12:25PM TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said he was privately approached about his interest in becoming the NFL's next commissioner. Bush said Tuesday the issue was discussed at a recent meeting with Patrick Rooney Sr., according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Rooney's brother is Dan Rooney, owner of Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers and co-chair of the search committee looking to replace the retiring Paul Tagliabue. "I met with Mr. Rooney and I said, 'I'm doing my job until I'm finished and then I'm going to consider other things,"' Bush told the newspaper. Bush has said he will not run for president in 2008. His final term as governor ends in January, although he doesn't believe NFL officials will hold the position open until then. Tagliabue, who has been commissioner since 1989, announced in March his decision to retire. Although he originally set a July 31 deadline to be out of the job, he has indicated his willingness to stay on longer. Copyright 2006 Associated Press. All rights reserved. May 24, 200620 yr I think Bush did a fine job as Gov. He hasn't done anything great besides his hurricane relief stuff. But he hasn't done anything especially bad. Except maybe FCAT.
May 24, 200620 yr Well, the whole A+ Plan is a disaster IMO (but really, as a student, what does my opinion matter?)
May 24, 200620 yr Jeb's an awesome governor. I have a total non-gay hard-on for him But he hasn't done anything especially bad. Except maybe FCAT. Learn to think for yourself. The FCAT is a very good thing. Well, the whole A+ Plan is a disaster IMO (but really, as a student, what does my opinion matter?) It doesn't. Most students just end up regurgitating what their teachers complain to them about, anyway. The A+ Plan is money, IMO.

May 24, 200620 yr Have you ever taken it? When I was in HS, I took the prototype FCAT, yes. If you haven't taken it then you really don't have an argument. Prototype is completely different than what it is now. The test is a joke.
May 24, 200620 yr If you haven't taken it then you really don't have an argument. Prototype is completely different than what it is now. The test is a joke. It was a prototype in the sense that it didn't count; we were the guinea pigs. As for comparing the material on my FCAT and the FCAT you take today, you'd be talking out of your ass if you pretended to know what was on my test. I am curious, though, as to what makes you label the test a joke.

The grading system on the Writes part penalizes you for not using fluffier words. Those are just a few complaint I have with it.

That sounds like a pretty terrible argument against a much-needed standardized test of basic skills and subject matter. When you get the chance, I'd like to hear your other complaints.
May 24, 200620 yr Well, the whole A+ Plan is a disaster IMO (but really, as a student, what does my opinion matter?) It doesn't. Most students just end up regurgitating what their teachers complain to them about, anyway. :thumbdown No need to be condescending. Believe me, I've formed many of my own opinions on the A+ Plan, and frankly it's kind of insulting for you to imply that I just regurgitate what my teacher's have told me. My biggest complaint about the A+ Plan is not the FCAT, which we will always have, because you just need to have a standardized test (even if they aren't good barometers for intelligence and aptitude). MY biggest problem is the way the A+ Plan distributes money. Schools that are struggling are punished, while those that succeed are rewarded. This seems kind of backwards. If anything, the struggling schools should be getting funds to help them meet the standards. There should also be some kind of accountability in the distribution of the reward funds. My school (Flanagan) recieved $300,000 last year for going from a D to a C, and all but $7,000 went to teacher bonuses. This isn't right, IMO. That money should go to better tools for students to learn.
May 24, 200620 yr The FCAT is a complete joke. I finished that test with flying colors in only a couple of minutes it seemed. If you can't pass that test, you've got some big problems. I will be very happy once Bush is out of office.

I will be very happy once Bush is out of office. If kids can't pass that test, then the schools may need to work harder to prepare their students with basic knowledge. Makes sense to me. For christ's sake (sorry Jesus), you guys are reaching right now. Bush has done a fine job as gov.
May 24, 200620 yr The problem is instead of teaching material, teachers are forced to work on "FCAT Skills" that nobody cares about. most students just sleep during them, and they don't learn anything at all. It shouldn't be the be all end all to school, like it is. It should supplement their normal teaching.

May 25, 200620 yr Well then that's the school's problem, not the state's administration. Perhaps their could be more guidelines for the way schools should approach the standardized testing prep, but all in all the system is fine. If schools would just teach the basic reading, writing and arithmetic then logically all students who give a damn would pass the FCAT, thus making it a success. The kids that don't care, well, they choose their own path.
May 25, 200620 yr My teachers in HS spent wayyyy too much time getting kids ready for the FCAT, particularly my math teachers. I think it's hurting more than helping.
May 25, 200620 yr the last thing the NFL (or anyone else) needs is that pompous a**hole running things
May 25, 200620 yr My teachers in HS spent wayyyy too much time getting kids ready for the FCAT, particularly my math teachers. I think it's hurting more than helping. You think anything a Republican does ends up hurting more than it helps.

You think anything a Republican does ends up hurting more than it helps. I know plenty of republican students who agree with me about the A+ plan. Political affiliation has much less to do with this than the best interests of our students.
