Where does South Florida rank?

Featured Replies

I went to a lot of games buddy. And most of the time, the stands were filled.

thats easy to say for someone who likes hockey. I went to about 13 games and most of the time there was no one there. Of course you like hockey and are going to say people are at the stadium. But fact is this sport is dead

:lol :lol :lol

Whatever. I am not saying it cause I am biased. I am saying because it is fact. Or are you going to call everyone who goes to games on this board, nutjobs?

I never said people were going in 2000-01 or 01-02. Cause no one was. Why? Cause the team sucked. People were there. Most nights there was at least 15,000 people in there.

There wasnt 15k at any of the games i went to this year. Most of them were on a saturday, and is 15k people something to be proud of ?

15K is pretty damn good for a franchise that a sport nobody supposedly cared about in South Florida and was in the midst of a rebuilding phase. Remember, Capacity is 19K. An average of 16K is a very good sign. I am done arguing with you cause I know that in the face of pure fact, you won't change.

Your loss.

Where is your pure fact? in some number that is curbed by the league. How about the fact that the panthers gave free tickets away and people still didnt go. Every game of the season there were free tickets being given away thats not very good for your franchise when you have to give away buisness and people still dont go.

Just to clarify this thread a little.

When I said that South Florida/Miami was a terrible sports town, I was basing about 90% of my opinion in terms of the people/fans that are here. I wasnt referring to the sports themselves (although not knowing if your baseball team will be around in 3 years is getting old). We do have the 4 majors plus big draw tennis and golf events.

I guess I should have titled the thread "Where do South Florida FANS rank" or something to that affect.

I mostly blame the thousands upon thousands of LONGTIME SoFla residents who insist upon rooting for the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Braves,Cubs, Knicks, Jets etc etc. It is these people who make this a bad sports town.

Im sure we have all had this happen to us: You walk into a South Florida sports bar and the place is packed with people and TV's. Its summertime and your getting ready to go grab a beer and watch a Marlins game but then you realize that out of 20 TV's, none are showing the Marlins game.

Would this ever happen in NY or Boston or Chicago?

Of course not.

I guess we're all on different pages. When I think of sports towns, I think of fans. The knowledge, intensity (through good and bad times), and overall personality/attitude of the fans towards their teams. I don't think Miami has a lot of great fans right now, but they will in the future.

Any town with all 4 major sports will be a good sports town because there are so many options all the time. That would make Miami a good sports town, along with NY, Chicago, LA (minus NFL), the Twin Cities and Detroit.

As for my UM comment earlier Mabdul, that had no relevance. Me going off on a tangent.

Just my two cents:

When you think of a thread about sports towns you immediatley think of the passion of the fans, attendance numbers, overall local outlook on the teams.

If you are going to measure what makes a great sports town on how many teams or how many big sports events a city gets than its completely different.

But Mabdul... in the future...

When the rest of the world hears Sports Town they think of the what I mentioned earlier... just to clear things up for you for the future.

Sports Town = The Choices Available for the Hard Core Sports Fan

South Florida offers everything imaginable for the sports fan (even spring training at reasonable driving distance)

Wrong. Read Miami15's post above.

A great sports town is made up of fans and the excitement they generate. The only time people in SoFLa get excited is during football season and when the Marlins, Heat or Panthers are in the playoffs.

SoFLa sucks as a sports town.

I wasn't aware you spoke for the "rest of the world". Thanks for clearing things up for me. In that case, I don't care what kind of sports town Miami is, and I abstain from the rest of this discussion. I'm just glad Miami has so many great sporting events because I'd be pretty bored if I lived in a great sports town like Green Bay.

Mabdul I think in many respects you are correct in your feeling that this is a great sports town in that we have the 4 majors (Baseball, Football, Basketball and Poker :mischief2) and we even have extras such as hockey, big draw tennis and 2 stops on the PGA tour. And this is not to mention the favorable weather (minus the 17 or so hurricanes that will be whipping thru shortly) for participant sports.

I think what Miami15 and I are saying is simply this: The fans down here suck COMPARED to big cities such as New York, Chicago, St. Louis, San Fransisco etc. Its a one-sport town (football).

All were saying is that our definition of a great sports town is not a place where empty baseball, basketball and hockey stadiums are the norm.

No need to abstain from the rest of this discussion. I hear abstinence is terribly boring.

Yeah, but I think I've said all I have to say here. We can keep arguing back and forth one whether the basketball and hockey games are empty or not, but really what's the point?

Maybe we agree at this point anyway. You started off by saying Miami was a TERRIBLE sports town, and that's what I took issue with. You are correct that the fan support is not as strong as it is in other cities. I would counter that it's perfectly adequate for my purposes, though it may not suit everyone else's needs. I am correct that Miami has as many great sporting events as any other city in this country...and possibly more than anywhere else. We even have NASCAR down in Homestead, apparently. I didn't even realize that.

Your definition of Miami as a sports town will apparently depend on what you value most in a sports town. But by a reasonable standard, there is no way Miami is a TERRIBLE sports town.

We could still argue town vs. town, though. For example, while I agree with you on New York, Chicago, and St. Louis, I have to disagree on San Francisco. For one, they don't have anywhere near the wide range of major sporting events that Miami has. For two, the only sport they outdraw Miami in is baseball. The Niners and Warriors do not draw as well as the Dolphins and Heat, neither in total numbers nor percent capacity. And they don't have a hockey team, so we beat them there as well. The Giants, of course, have it all over the Marlins.

FutureGM you have no idea what you are talking about in regards to Hockey. Hockey is quietly a really popular sport down here. No the Panthers don't have the glitter and glamour the Dolphins and the Heat enjoy, but I'll be damned if I am wrong, they draw good sized crowds and the actually sport is huge in youth leagues down here.

I'm sorry, but nobody talks about hockey that lives in South Florida besides a couple of people on this board.

It's a winter sport, and this city never has anything resembling winter. It's just not going to catch on.

Your posts are mindnumbing.

You sir are an idiot. :banghead

The Panthers drew over 16,000 on average this year.

My guess is probally alot closer to the actual average than your quick 2 second google. Do you really think that 16k people went to the games every other night or so. Just look in the stands when you have sections that have 20 people in them youre not drawing 16k fans. Sponsors buy most of the tickets to begin with. Your 16k avg. isnt remotely close. The NHL is obviously going to curb its Attendance i mean they just got out of a lockout can you blame them. Hockey isnt a Florida sport.

The BAC was absolutely packed and either sold out or very close to being sold out every night for the last 2 or 3 months of the season, the atmosphere was great.

You don't know what you're talking about.

hmm. cheap and easy to find tickets should be a plus to the hard core sports fan.

Yeah I guess I was speaking in terms of San Frans' large hardcore baseball fanbase. Going to a baseball game there makes going to a baseball game at Dolphins Stadium feel like having a boot stomped on your face for 3 hours.

The BAC was absolutely packed and either sold out or very close to being sold out every night for the last 2 or 3 months of the season, the atmosphere was great.

You don't know what you're talking about.

no it wasnt all you hockey fans must be going to a diffrent game cuse i was at the Tampa game and the panths were a couple points out and there was 4-5 sections lowerbowl that had maybe 20 people in them it seemd every other row was empty. I didnt even bother to strain my neck and look up to the cheap seats. The only game i went to with a decent amount of people was the finale. To draw fans you need one of 2 things or both a good team or a history and a large fanbase. The panthers and marlins have neither thats why they dont pull crowds.

March 5? or maybe the 3rd? either way it was the game that i got free tickets from the Panth website and sat in row 8-9 with my legs in the row in front of me, sorry but that shouldnt be happening. There going to lose a lot more fans next year if they make you pay to cross the street.(i heard its going to be 5$) they are getting tired of losing money by people not paying for parking and parking at sawgrass.

I hate hockey but its nice to get free tickets free parking and be entertained for a couple hours. I give them my fair share of money at the concessions

Miami is bar-none the worst "major" sports town in America.

All you need to do is look at the "White Hot Heat." Everyone wears white so the empty seats (which also became white) are less visible to a national television audience.

Sad, really. This town has no less than 4 legitimate franchise players on seperate teams in Roberto Luongo, Dwayne Wade, Shaquille O'Neal and Miguel Cabrera but nobody cares. Put those guys on the New York Rangers, Knicks and Yankees or the Blackhawks Cubs and Bulls and they'd never be off the cover of SI/ESPN/NHL 2006 etc.

Everyone's got an excuse why to go to the game (traffic, heat, too far, too out of the way, too long) but no one listens to the reasons to go.

Hmmm The Heat outdrew your knicks and Nets and every other team in the NBA this year, they had the number 1 selling jersey and a top 10 selling jersey as well.

You cant get a playoff ticket for the heat, you need to buy season tickets right now 3 years in advanced LOL

The dolphins will sell out every game next year as always.

The panthers although not a playoff contender for over 10 years and after a lockout in a place where many have never even seen ICE not out of the fridge, or snow ( I have never seen it in my 27 years of life lol), still outdrew 1/3 of the NHL LOL

We sell out tennis tourneyments, we sell out and outdraw majors for the golf tourney's, we host the Super bowl once every 3-4 years, we host major world events and Indy as well.

Miami is a good sports town. I stated before how most folks have loyalties to their other teams. It is why at a jets dolphins games I have come home with black eyes before, of course I kicked the crap out of the jets fan too :)

Give the marlins 10-15 years of consistent play with Keeping their good players around with a new stadiumand they will be a top 10 grossing team in MLB.

You can say we are spoiled, that we are mixture from all over, but you need to say we are a good sports town overall with great sports fans.

This holds true for LA also, they are the same exact way for us except switch football for baseball around.

With all due respect......I have a hard time believing that the Miami Heat outdrew "every other team in the NBA this year".

Is there a link that can verify this?

Then shutup if you hate hockey. Its obvious you have no idea what you are talking about and much rather see the sport keel over and die than continue.

The Panthers actually broke even this year according to reports. So they aren't struggling like you make them out to be.

What do i have no idea of?

I wouldnt consider breaking even a success so yeah they are struggling. Isnt the point of a buisness to make money?

Your point of defending hockey is absurd when you consider breaking even a success. Isnt the point of a buisness to make money?

When you have to look at the tv guide to find the channel the playoffs are on you got problems. last time i checked hockey was played indoors, so where does the Outdoor life Net. fit in? I dont care either way about hockey just dont try to make people think its thriving and making money cuse its not.
