Where does South Florida rank?

Featured Replies

I'm trying to think about it, and I'm pretty sure Da U is the single best big city collegiate sports program there is. LA may have us beat overall with their USC/UCLA combo, but neither one of those programs stacks up to Miami overall...at least not in my estimation. USC, maybe you can make an arguement.

No. This is almost laughable.

"Da U" has nothing on UCLA. Nothing. UCLA is perhaps the best overall collegiate athletic program in the country.

Athletic programs don't only consist of football and baseball.

Total Championships (Men, Women, Coed):

  • UCLA: 97
  • Stanford: 91
  • Southern California: 84
  • Oklahoma State: 47
  • Arkansas: 43
  • LSU: 40
  • Texas: 39
  • Michigan: 32
  • North Carolina: 31
  • Penn State: 30

I only have the top 10, but yeah Miami is nowhere to be found.

A great sports town? YES

A great baseball town? No

Don, you're argument that S.Florida is a bad sports town is based on the Marlins. Has anyone even considered golf or tennis? Don't we have a huge tennis tournament in Key Biscayne every year?

I agree with M.Doobakus, the teams are here, the sports are here, its a great sports town. Not even comparable to an Atlanta for example.

FutureGM you have no idea what you are talking about in regards to Hockey. Hockey is quietly a really popular sport down here. No the Panthers don't have the glitter and glamour the Dolphins and the Heat enjoy, but I'll be damned if I am wrong, they draw good sized crowds and the actually sport is huge in youth leagues down here.

How is it any better than Atlanta? I'm confused.

Atlanta is horrible. When the Braves go to the playoffs 14 straight years and STILL can't sell out playoff games ... well they don't deserve a team. Thay have the history, the players, the sucess to be one of the most popular sports franchises ever and they barely ever sellout.

This won't make me any friends, but as an outsider south Florida fans are seen as some of the biggest bandwagoners around.

And thats the truth.

I'm sorry, but nobody talks about hockey that lives in South Florida besides a couple of people on this board.

It's a winter sport, and this city never has anything resembling winter. It's just not going to catch on.

Its a great sports town but no one goes to the Heat, Marlins or Panthers games unless they are in the playoffs. :lol :lol :lol

Best sports town in the USA.

Heat were number 2-3 in attendence this year

Hockey will never fly down here and if you think the panthers draw good crowds your mistaken. They were a couple points out of the 8 seed and they couldnt get 6k fans, thats ridiculous. Side of 2 sports in florida that no one cares about baseball and hockey this is one of the best sports towns. Where else can you play golf on one of our hundreds of courses and then watch a playoff game and hit up a sports bar after. We got the life. And for the baseball thing, how can you expect people to show up at a game when the team was sold sorry but the owners screwed us and the team im not going to support them anymore id be happy if this team got sold.

The owner screwed us? Loria brought a championship to this town in 2003 and still didnt get fan support/stadium deal done. Should he have raised the payroll to 100 million this year?

You'd be happy if the team got sold? Um......nevermind.

World Series > New Stadium

Do you really think a new stadium is going to bring fans in. Yeah for the first week and then its going be the same as Pro Robbie. A new stadium isnt going to change the marlin franchise it would only make it worse.

Miami is bar-none the worst "major" sports town in America.

All you need to do is look at the "White Hot Heat." Everyone wears white so the empty seats (which also became white) are less visible to a national television audience.

Sad, really. This town has no less than 4 legitimate franchise players on seperate teams in Roberto Luongo, Dwayne Wade, Shaquille O'Neal and Miguel Cabrera but nobody cares. Put those guys on the New York Rangers, Knicks and Yankees or the Blackhawks Cubs and Bulls and they'd never be off the cover of SI/ESPN/NHL 2006 etc.

Everyone's got an excuse why to go to the game (traffic, heat, too far, too out of the way, too long) but no one listens to the reasons to go.

First of all, most of the naysayers seem to be equating sports town with sports fans. They're not the same thing. There's a greater diversity of sports events in this city than perhaps anywhere else in the country. And with the exception of the Marlins and Panthers, these events always seem to have a good atmosphere. Is that due to bandwagon fans? I don't know, and I don't care. All I know is that I have a lot of fun when I'm there. Having people lose their minds over their teams is fine, but in the end, I'd rather be in Miami and have a ridiculous multitude of sports events to go check out than be in somewhere like Green Bay where people are fanatical about the one team they have...and they get all of 8 games a year.

Also, there are a couple ways you can look at the Orange Bowl crowds. I don't know many small private universities that draw anywhere near what the Canes do. Notre Dame, obviously...can't think of any others.

I'm just counting football, basketball, and baseball. Small collegiate sports really don't factor into the quality of a sports town. I get your point, but I think you know what I meant, and on those terms, I think you'd agree with me.

I'm just going to stress this again. This has almost nothing to do with at least what I thought my point was. I highly doubt LA is turning out in big numbers to watch swimming, and lacrosse, and crew or whatever. I'm talking about the programs that garner large amounts of interest. Baseball, basketball, football. Period. You guys knew what I meant, right?

All you need to do is look at the "White Hot Heat." Everyone wears white so the empty seats (which also became white) are less visible to a national television audience.

Well, that's completely inaccurate. Are you serious?

Miami is such a bandwagon town. the mindset of Miami fans is if we dont have a chance at winning everything, we dont show up

U of M is one of the best football programs of this decade and the Bowl is never full (unless we play FSU or UF). Basketball support is getting better, but still a total joke for an ACC program

South Florida only knew the Panthers existed in 1996, and now nobody cares about hockey

pretty much every fan in the AAA today jumped on the Shaq bandwagon

i dont think i have to mention support for the Marlins :banghead

Miami is one of the better cities in terms of quality of events, since there are 4 pro teams, great HS football and major golf and tennis events every year

in terms of fan support, were right up there with LA as the worst

south florida is one big band wagon...when the heat were garbage no one went now that shaq is there evryone goes....marlins enough said...in 2003 this richass girl in my class got tickets to the WS game like front row...she didnt know who the marlins were playing and she couldnt name 3 marlin players :banghead but they claim to be diehards...yea when thyre winning :banghead

Outside of the Dolphins, Miami is a terrible sports town. The Fins are just sort of grandfathered in and everyone likes them.

Yeah, right. :lol

South Florida is a bangwagon town. Most fans will only root for a winner. And this goes for every South Florida team.

This is true.

Mabdul, if you just look at football, baseball and basketball it's an easy comparison between Miami, USC and UCLA. Poor interest until national title hopes show up. I mean, USC and Miami can barely sell out stadiums (even if they do) when they're favorites for national titles. And really, no other private schools outside of Miami are on a huge national stage when it comes to sports (outside of ND).

I don't understand the argument here. There is no way to defend the "bandwagon-ness" of Miami sports. And sometimes the bandwagon doesn't take effect - case in point the 2003 (playoff, WS champions) Marlins getting outdrawn by the 2003 Tigers (43-119).

Like was stated numerous times by several people, give it some time. Let the fanbases grow.

I think every town has bandwagoners. I'm not defending that aspect of the town...not really...it's not something I care about. As I said upthread...if I go to a game, and there's a good atmosphere, I really don't care how long my fellow attendees have been fans of the team. The whole bandwagon thing is one of those arguements I've never understood.

My arguement is not based on attendance numbers here. The fact is that we have the Canes, and very few cities can boast of anything even close. There's no need to argue USC/UCLA vs. UM because either way, they're all elite programs with very few competitors in other major sports cities.

The Panthers drew over 16,000 on average this year.

If you go to a pro/major college sporting event, I would hope that the atmosphere would be good. I mean, you're at a sporting event. There are bad atmospheres (I'm sure that Kansas City Royals games are not that great of an atmosphere), but there is no reason to think that a minority of cities have pro/major college sporting events that you'd have an absolute horrible time at. With that reasoning any town with major sports teams would be great sports cities.

And with all due respect, the University of Miami won the majority of their football NCs in the 1980s. That was 20 years ago. They have won 1 in the last 15 years. In that time FSU has won 2. When do the championships in the 80s become history? Alabama has won 12 football championships. Tennessee has 7 football championships. Ohio State has 7 football championships. Yet these programs and fanbases somehow come across with a lot more intelligence and class. I think many towns could boast college programs that are very close.

But that is my reasoning. I'm not sure you've been reading my posts carefully enough.

As for your point about the Canes, I didn't really get it. I'm not saying they're THE elite program. Tennessee, Auburn, and FSU are all excellent programs. They also happen to exist in cities that don't come close to Miami as sports towns. There are a bunch of great college football programs, but pretty much none of them besides USC and UM exist in major sports cities. My point is simply that having the Canes is a major feather in Miami's helmet.

You sir are an idiot. :banghead

My guess is probally alot closer to the actual average than your quick 2 second google. Do you really think that 16k people went to the games every other night or so. Just look in the stands when you have sections that have 20 people in them youre not drawing 16k fans. Sponsors buy most of the tickets to begin with. Your 16k avg. isnt remotely close. The NHL is obviously going to curb its Attendance i mean they just got out of a lockout can you blame them. Hockey isnt a Florida sport.
