Reaves The Arizona Republic Jun. 4, 2006 12:00 AM Here's one for you: Twelve players in the major leagues are making more money this season than the entire 25-man roster of the Florida Marlins. That's right. The Marlins' team payroll at the start of the season was $14.98 million. That's nearly $7 million below the $21.6 million Alex Rodriguez makes as the highest paid player in the game this year. In fact, A-Rod is one of five New York Yankees making more this season than the entire Marlins squad. Derek Jeter is being paid $20.6 million, Jason Giambi $20.4 million, Mike Mussina $19 million and Randy Johnson $15.6 million. Jeff Bagwell, who won't play a game this year, or ever again, is making $19.3 million. So is Barry Bonds. Others making more than the Marlins: Manny Ramirez $18.2 million, Todd Helton $16.6 million, Andy Pettitte $16.4 million, Magglio Ordo?ez $16.2 million and Chan Ho Park $15.5 million. Six other players, including Pedro Martinez, Albert Pujols and Jim Thome are making $14 million or more. Rocket science Because he's starting late, Roger Clemens won't be among those making more than the Florida roster this year. But he could be paid more for three days sitting at home than all but six Marlins will make playing all year. Clemens signed a pair of contracts last week - a minor league deal and a separate major league package. Both are prorated. The minor league deal pays $322,000 for a full season. If Rocket stays on schedule and spends three weeks in the minors, he will earn about $43,000. Once he gets back to the majors, his salary jumps to $121,564 a day. That's based on a $22 million deal paid out over 181 days beginning Opening Day, which is how major league salaries are handled. Clemens is scheduled to make his first major league start June 22 at home against Minnesota. That would be the 81st day of the season, leaving Clemens with 100 paydays this year. June 4, 200620 yr How about some articles praising the Marlins recent run of 8 of 11? Who really cares about payroll comparisons already, we know A-Rod makes more money for opening a bag of sunflower seeds in the dugout than some Marlins do all year but does it matter? Not really. The payroll is what it is, we all know it and frankly watching this team on the field it doesn't even bother me at all. I'm enjoying watching this "cheap" team more than I enjoyed watching last year's more expensive team personally.

June 5, 200620 yr Todd Helton, Magglio Ordonez=All Stars for health insurance providors, constant injuries only let them be effective every so often Andy Pettitte=scared wife, rest of league=abusive husband Chan Ho Park=not worth the league minimum Randy Johnson=another yankee who keeps an AARP card next to his paycheck, rapidly declining Who cares what alot of players make if they arent earning their grossly overpaid contracts? We have bang for our buck, the best lineup $15 million can buy.
