September 23, 200321 yr Two teams very evenly matched By Jim Baker MLB Insider Send an Email to Jim Baker Tuesday, September 23 Updated: September 23 1:52 PM ET If baseball were like Greco-Roman wrestling, then going through teams on a position-by-position would make sense. If Mike Leiberthal had to face Ivan Rodriguez in some sort of one-on-one competition, then it would be perfectly logical to assess one's season against the other's. Baseball isn't that kind of game though, yet writers continually do this kind of comparison. You're going to see a lot of it come playoff time. Why do it, then? Well, for one thing, because it's fun. With the Marlins and Phillies set to begin their three-game showdown in Miami tonight, let's take a look at the clubs' position players using that old matchup format. Catcher: One of the smartest moves of the 2002-03 off-season was the Marlins signing of Ivan Rodriguez. Knowing that the Braves were loaded and the Phillies were on a spending spree, the Marlins did what they could by getting Rodriguez for one season at $10 million. It's paid off nicely. With the departure of Mike Lowell to a broken hand, Pudge has been Florida's best player. Offensively, Leiberthal and Rodriguez have been about par. Pudge is to be commended for a new-found patience at the plate. He is walking more than he ever has in his career. While Leiberthal has never quite rediscovered his 1999 power stroke (31 homers) he is having a decent season. Pudge gets the nod on defense as the Phillies have the absolute worst record in the league against the stolen base. The team ERAs are comparable. Jim Thome First Base Philadelphia Phillies Profile 2003 SEASON STATISTICS GM HR RBI R SB AVG 153 44 126 106 0 .268 First Base: Derek Lee, along with Rodriguez and Lowell, has been the main offensive force for Florida this year. He is shaping up to be a very consistent player from year-to-year, and his plate discipline is improving. Jim Thome is not quite hitting the heights he did while with the Indians in 2002, but he is still the leader of the Phillies' attack and, in a Barry Bonds-free world, would be a strong contender for the MVP Award. Thome has certainly been worth the money it took to bring him on board. Second Base: The Phillies have gotten a big improvement at second base for two reasons: they had the smarts to jettison Marlon Anderson and Placido Polanco has stepped up his game in 2003. By the time it's all done, the 27-year old will have set career highs in runs, RBI, home runs, walks, stolen bases and slugging average. Luis Castillo of the Marlins has picked it up from last year and way up from his poor 2001 effort. His stealing has gone in the sewage treatment plant, however. Never a high percentage guy to begin with, he's barely a fifty-fifty bet to make it on a steal these days. Shortstop: If this is how Alex Gonzalez is going to keep improving as he heads into his prime, then we've got something here. After a serious downturn following an interesting 1999 rookie year, he's back on an upward trajectory. Then there's Jimmy Rollins, whose career seems to be at a kind of standstill. Nothing seems to be improving, which isn't to say it couldn't since he's only 24. Third Base: At the time of Mike Lowell's injury he was clearly the team's offensive leader. The wonderful thing about baseball is that, somehow, a key player can go down and a team can still thrive. It calls into question the whole MVP concept. The Marlins are 13-7 since Lowell went out with his injury. Miguel Cabrera is having an excellent intro to the big leagues. I've probably written this before, but he has a fine future in the majors ahead of him as an outfielder. As a third baseman, the sky is the limit. The Phillies haven't gotten much out of the position vacated by Scott Rolen. David Bell and Tomas Perez have played there the majority of the time. It will be interesting to see what the Phillies do with Bell and the three remaining years on his contract. Left Field: What can be said about Pat Burrell's season that hasn't been said already? Earlier this year, I wrote that his low batting average was not so troubling in that his other stats seemed to be holding up well. Several months later, I don't know if I can still defend that position. The Marlins have started seven different players in left this year with Jeff Conine being the man down the stretch. Apart from the one big game against the Phillies (the 11-4 victory on September 17), he hasn't responded yet but he is certainly capable of doing so. Juan Pierre Center Field Florida Marlins Profile 2003 SEASON STATISTICS GM HR RBI R SB AVG 156 1 41 96 61 .301 Centerfield: Did this really have to wait until 2003? Wasn't Marlon Byrd better than Tom Goodwin last year? Yes. But that's how it goes sometimes. Byrd, even without the year of Triple A under his belt, would have outperformed the woeful Glanville last year. If only he weren't so old (26). Juan Pierre has been a pleasant surprise for the Marlins who got him in the deal for powerguy Preston Wilson. Pierre is having a better season at Pro Player than he had at Coors last year. He's never going to be a main cog for a team, but he supports well. More walks would help and shaving another five or six caught stealings off his total would make him a more productive runner. Interestingly, he's only two weeks older than Byrd. Rightfield: What are they going to put on Bobby Abreu's tombstone? "He got the job done with nobody looking," would be my guess. He's still one of the most unheralded good players in the majors. Maybe it will take a trip to the postseason to get him out there for all to see or maybe he'll just continue being a well-kept secret. He and Thome are the rocks of the lineup. Juan Encarnacion is having a remarkably unspectacular season in right for the Marlins. It's the kind of season that's just kind of there, not good enough to get excited about but not bad enough to call attention to itself. With one game separating the two teams, what the whole season may boil down to in the end (and I hate to use this as a reason because it sounds like an excuse) is that the Phillies close out against the Braves while the Marlins finish up against a Mets team that seems bound and determined to never win again.
