I am glad someone on the staff finally grew a pair and beaned a Phillie hitter. I am growing tired of going into Philly and being lit up for 10 runs a game because the Phillie hitters choose to crowd the plate and take advantage of playing at a little league field.

 

Showing the batter who owns the strike zone is a key part of being a good pitcher in the league. Especially in this day and age, it's just to bad the league and it's umpires get so pissy about a few hitters being beaned because a pitcher pitches inside. The pitcher has such an unfair disadvantage today, and it shouldn't be like that.

 

Scotty O grew up a little today, and some of the other pitchers should do the same.

 

 

Don't get me started on the obnoxious celebrations by the Phillie hitters....

 

 

In conclusion, the pitcher should own the strikezone, not the hitter, and a pitcher should have every right to defend it.

I was at the game.....still total BS that he gets thrown out for hitting ONE BATTER. All the Philly fans who tried to explain to me that it was intentional were in some serious denial as well. More than a few acknowledged it was BS though. There wasn't a single warning before.

I totally agree with throwing at the hitters, pitcher's HAVE to be able to throw inside or they're going to get lit up like a christmas tree. you have to be able to throw on both sides of the plate without fear of getting tossed from the game. I can see an umpire giving a warning if things are getting out of hand: ex. pitcher's are consistently headhunting or the pitcher has hit 15 batters in the game already. I know ump's probably worry about a batter gettting injured but this sport should be able to have some contact in it. Maybe the player's/umpires of today need to grow balls like the players/umpires of the past.

You cannot under any circumstance let the hitter feel comfortable. If you brush a hitter back and pitch to them on the inside part of the plate you do three things:

 

1) A hitter feels uncomfortable at the plate

2) They are less likely to literally stand on top of the plate (Utley and Rollins)

3) You can establish the outer part of the plate

 

The Marlins pitchers have accomplished none of the against the Phillies this year. Seems like every game we play against them they score 8-10 runs.

 

Brush Utley and Rollins off the plate and you can pitch to them on the outside corner. Right now you can't do that.

 

25-30 years ago, if Utley stands where he currently does, he gets knocked down and maybe even a bean ball to the head. Not many hitters could get away with it then, except Frank Robinson, because you didn't want to mess with Robinson.

 

PS, balls to the head are a definite no-no. Anything below the nipples and above the knees is fine.

Common sense I guess. I think pitchers should be allowed to pitch inside, and naturally you are gonna hit people now and again. Especially if you're struggling with your control. Also the fact that it's the starting pitcher getting thrown out after hitting one batter, who isn't even any kind of a target. I could understand more someone from the pen who looks like they were sent out to try and hit someone and do nothing else. Especially considering that Cabrera is getting pegged quite regularly by starters and no one is even getting warned for that. But if we hit their #8 hitter our pitcher gets tossed.

There?s a big difference between backing a guy off when he?s crowding the plate and throwing a 95mph fastball at someone?s head. I?m the first to say pitchers need to pitch inside and you can?t let a hitter hog the plate like he owns it. That?s totally different from a pitcher who acts like a tough guy hitting people on the head in the American League and miraculously never making that ?mistake? when he?s playing in the National League. To me, that is called a coward especially hitting someone who never even showed you up.

 

To enjoy watching anyone get hit on the head and watch them on the ground with their eyelids fluttering is sick. You?re talking about something that could do irreparable damage or kill someone. There are a few players that I can?t stand but I don?t ever want to see any of them in that situation.
