October 10, 200619 yr CHICAGO -- Joe Girardi, considered a leading candidate for the Chicago Cubs' managing job, interviewed for the position on Monday. The Florida Marlins fired Girardi last week. Girardi guided them to a 78-84 record and kept them in contention for a playoff spot until late September despite having the majors' youngest team and lowest payroll. "Joe and I spent the better part of the day together," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said. "I thought it went very well, and I think Joe appreciated coming down to Wrigley Field and seeing a lot of the people he knew from his playing days here." The Cubs chose not to bring back manager Dusty Baker when his contract expired after going 66-96. Known for his gritty play and catching skills, Girardi began his career with the Cubs in 1989 and spent his first four seasons with the team. He returned for three more years in 2000 and made the All-Star team that season. His teammates in that second stretch included current Cubs pitchers Mark Prior, Kerry Wood and Carlos Zambrano. General manager Jim Hendry, who was not available for comment, plans to interview two internal candidates this week: Triple-A manager Mike Quade and Double-A manager Pat Listach. LINK
October 10, 200619 yr My hunch is that no more hirings are done by big money clubs until the Yankee situation resolves itself.
October 11, 200619 yr This is obvious he spent parts of his career there loved the city and the fans. Can't wait to see Girardi ATTEMPT to right the ship.
October 12, 200619 yr I just want him to get a managing job ASAP that will pay him more annually than what he is currently owed on his contract with us. It shouldn't be problem considering that he's about to win MOTY, but I just want somebody to hurry up and hire him already.
October 13, 200619 yr This is obvious he spent parts of his career there loved the city and the fans. Can't wait to see Girardi ATTEMPT to right the ship. The latest scuttle has the Cubs leaning more towards Pinella, and Pinella does not want to manage the Nats. It is looking more and more like Girardi might be heading to Washington. He just had his 2nd interview with them. Will make for interesting baseball when we face them. I personally wanted to see him go to the Cubs. Could still happen, but it seems unlikely.
October 14, 200619 yr espn.com Updated: Oct. 14, 2006, 1:28 PM ET Source: Cubs favor Piniella as new manager Lou Piniella could be the manager of the Chicago Cubs before the World Series begins, a source told ESPN.com's Peter Gammons. The Chicago Sun-Times first reported Saturday that negotiations between the Cubs and Piniella could begin Monday. On Friday, Piniella took himself out of the running for the Giants' opening. He has also spoken to the Nationals and Rangers, although he said the Washington job is not an ideal fit. The 63-year-old Piniella has been working in television since parting ways with the Devil Rays after the 2005 season following three difficult years as manager. Before that he managed the Mariners for 10 seasons, won the 1990 World Series as Reds manager and also managed the Yankees. The Cubs chose not to bring back manager Dusty Baker when his contract expired after going 66-96 this season. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
