October 22, 200620 yr OK so I just finished installing the OS on my brand new MacBook. This thing is pretty sweet! My question is - can I use Firefox with a Mac? I got the impression from their website that I cannot.
October 22, 200620 yr Author Thank you sir. Wow. So far there's a lot to get used to. AIM has been cutting off randomly for no reason. LOL. I dunno.
October 22, 200620 yr Congrats on the Mac! Why use firefox though? Safari is so much better... Also why install AIM when you can use iChat
October 22, 200620 yr Oh no, you bought a MacBook? Return it while you still can. Before your disappointment in the product sends you to therapy and you waste as much money dealing with your depression over purchasing a shoddy computer as you spent on the damn thing in the first place. Hey, but maybe you'll be luckier than me, and it won't be total piece of crap.
October 22, 200620 yr Does Ichat work like that? Lemme check it out.... Yea you can set up ur AIM, Yahoo, Google, MSN messaging programs and run them with iChat..Very easy and less sh*t you have to install, saves space
October 22, 200620 yr What kind of problems have you had with it? The problem books are shutting down randomly with no warning. One second I'm on the internet, or writing a paper, or watching a dvd, and everything shuts down completely. There are a number of explanations running around on the net, though I don't know which one -- if any -- are accurate. The problem is common, but not found in all systems. So I guess you shouldn't worry unless it starts happening to you. I read somewhere that Apple fixed the problem on the assembly line in week 35 of production. If yours was made after that point, perhaps you'll be fine. (I don't know how to determine the production date, though I'm sure you can find that information online). It's prevelant enough that some of those who've experienced the problem are initiating a class action lawsuit against Apple. Here's the link: http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2132 I will say, however, that if this bug didn't exist I would love the book. Size, price, versatility, and aethetics are all superb, but all those things pale in comparison to a notebook that doesn't function.
October 22, 200620 yr I purchased my first Macintosh computer in 1994 - a Performa 550. I am now on my fourth one (a 2005 Mini); and I still use both my third (2001 G3 iBook) and my second (1998 Beige G3 desktop). All computer products have bugs in them, but the Mac is by far the most reliable system I've ever used. As long as they keep making them, I wouldn't get anything else.

I think in Flummoxes' case is a rare one. He's just having a bad Mac experience but this is not the norm.
October 22, 200620 yr I think alot of it is the luck of the draw. I've had two different models of iPods and never had a single problem with either and would swear by them. On the other hand, some of my friends have had tons of problems with them and probably wouldn't recommend them to anyone.

My girl had to return her IPod Mini once a week for 3 months until they finally gave her a Nano. Now she has no problems. My 2nd generation IPod has never given me any problems.
October 22, 200620 yr I forgot to mention that the Mac is also the easiest computer I've had to troubleshoot, fix and/or upgrade; both hardware and software. And, to be fair -- iPod and Mac are two different things.

I would like to say that I tried to respond to this earlier, but my computer randomly shut down, so I needed to reboot. Obviously, as a consequence, I lost my post. That might have been the case in the past, but this is a monumental f***up by Apple. I've been a Mac user since 2001, and have loved their products. Even when my 1st gen. ipod died inexplicably after 6 months, and they made me pay 250 dollars for repair, I wasn't too upset. This situation makes me irate, though. I spoke to customer support 3 times, and they said I would need to be without my computer for 3 weeks in order to have it repaired. (Then you read on the internet that oftentimes the problem recurs). I cannot be without my computer for 3 weeks, and I will not buy a new one after spending 1400 dollars on this glorified paperweight. Argh. I'm so frustrated. **Beetle this is a lot more than 1 lemon in a bunch. This is more like the company sold a whole harvest of lemons.
October 22, 200620 yr I feel your pain, Mr. Lummox. I have no reason to doubt your sincerity; however, I tend to rely on my own experience to form an opinion, and the overwhelming impression I get is that they're not perfect but they are the best. And, just to be clear -- even though I've only owned four, I've worked on countless systems over the years: Macs, PC's, UNIX, Chyrons and Amigas. Believe me, I know my alternatives quite well. I still prefer the Mac.
October 22, 200620 yr I've never encountered a problem like this in Macs before. It's frustrating. I just want to spread the word, so people know what they're getting into. Like I said, if the problem didn't exist, I would love this thing.
October 22, 200620 yr Author So far I have really enjoyed using this MacBook. Still some stuff I'm figuring out, but I'm going to spend the afternoon tinkering with it.
October 22, 200620 yr Still using my original blueberry iBook from 1999 at FSU today. Runs Mac OS X, can do WiFi with Airport Card, and can still hang out with the web surfing. I had Firefox on it, but since I use Safari, I took it off. Firefox's sibling on the Mac is Camino.
