November 4, 200620 yr http://cbs.sportsline.com/mlb/story/9776220 Mets' Martinez may retire if he doesn't regain full strength Nov. 3, 2006 CBS SportsLine.com wire reports SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- Pedro Martinez is recovering well from an operation on his right shoulder but said Friday he would consider retiring if he does not return to full strength. "It's getting better and progress is above all what is hoped for," Martinez told the Associated Press. "To go back I have to recover, I have to be healthy. But if God doesn't want that, then I would have to think about giving it all up." The New York Mets pitcher said he is working on flexibility but that he, "won't put his hand on a ball," until at least March. Martinez, 35, missed the playoffs and end of the 2006 season with a torn right rotator cuff and an injury to his leg. The Mets, forced to start backup pitchers, were eliminated by the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Championship Series. The Dominican-born pitcher went 9-8 with a 4.48 earned run average but said 2006 was the toughest season of his career. "It's going to be a bitter winter because I am going to have to do a lot of work. The pain I feel was one of the worst I have felt with any injury in my career," the three-time Cy Young Award-winner said. Martinez, just two strikeouts shy of a career 3,000, has two years left on his contract with the Mets. AP NEWS
November 4, 200620 yr wow. I hope everything works out, and he can pitch again. He may be on an opposing team, but I really enjoy watching him pitch.
November 4, 200620 yr maybe Mets_bs would get rid of his sig if he retires. Nope Also, as stated in the blurb that was posted, he's progessing very well and is ahead of schedule on rehab. Of course if he doesn't gain his strength back he'll retire, but that decision is quite a ways off.

I don't mind a pedro sig, but one that states all of his stats from May is just obnoxious.
November 5, 200620 yr I remember the discussion/argument I had about him being able to stay healthy through the duration of the contract. Good times.
November 5, 200620 yr As a person, he is a concided prick, from MY EXPERIENCES! But I wish him to get better, he is a great pitcher!
November 5, 200620 yr I've talked to him/met him twice and he was nothing but class to me. Maybe because I was wearing the right cap. :mischief
November 5, 200620 yr I have zero ill will towards Pedro and rooted for him the last two years but seeing him go from '99/'00 and then what he was in 2004 and now, it's sad. I'd rather him hang it up, keep the best career ERA ever, and ride into the hall.

November 5, 200620 yr Getting his autographs was one of the best ones I've ever gotten, mainly because of the way I got it Sometimes I'll wait by a stoplight a couple blocks from the park where most of the Giants guys drive by and if it's a red light i'll approach their cars for an autograph...so i see Jose Vizcaino pull up in his Range Rover, and get him to stop and sign...when he rolls down the window I look in the passengers seat and see Pedro...I quickly go to my backpack, pull out a card I had of him and ask if he would sign too, and he does it...that was pure luck
