Baez missed the final five weeks of last season with an appendectomy and wasn't very good when healthy. However, he has to be considered one of the top relievers on the market. The Reds or Marlins could consider him as a closer, and many teams will look at him as a setup man.
November 10, 200619 yr I think this is a strong indication we are going to be signing a lot of "underachieving" live arms (German, Wellemeyer, etc), and see if any of them come to camp and stick. This doesn't give me much confidence in assembling a bullpen for next year, but I'm hopeful they go after atleast 2 solid moderate RP free agents. We have no shot at Baez. He will get a lot of money to setup for someone.
November 10, 200619 yr BTW, Fields had 25 saves as a closer for the CS Sky Sox after being injured and then cut by the Royals earlier in the year. He was also named to the all-PCL team for 2006.
November 11, 200619 yr Field led the PCL in saves last season even though appeared in only 32 games (out of roughly 130 game season) with 25. He was injured in 2005 when he was with KC, refused a minor league assignment at the end of the season and signed a minor league contract with the Rockies for 2006. I suspect what the Marlins like about the guy is he only walked nine (9) guys in 49 innings for the SkySox while striking out 55. He did well when called up in Sept but who knows if he can contribute in 2007. Obviously Beinfest is betting he can.
November 11, 200619 yr Just a little thing I picked up. If Field makes the Marlins, his salary will be $425,000, not the league minimum. Among other reasons, it's probably one of the reasons why he signed with the Marlins even though the Mets and perhaps others were interested in his services.
November 11, 200619 yr I like this signing. Wouldn't mind getting Baez as well but I'm agreeing that the Mets will take a shot on him. They are hurting for pitchers right now. Any pitcher. Maybe Pavano would make the drive across town for them. Just tell him to be careful when he gets behind garbage trucks.

Almost by definition, minor league free agents are not in the plans of atleast one organization, but that doesn't mean the other 29 clubs don't consider him worth a contract.
