Most Overrated President

Featured Replies

Many of you that have been around for a while may remember the 'Best Of' threads on different areas of music back in the day. While I'm not discounting that series coming back, here's your chance to help decide the different side of the debate: Most Overrated. This is the third thread in the series, most overrated President.

In this thread, nominate three choices for most overrated Presidents of all time. Any person nominating more than three will only have their first three selected. Furthermore, it's pointless to nominate someone who has already been named earlier - they don't get points for being brought up more than once (yet).

My nominations:

FDR

Abraham Lincoln

John F Kennedy

Thomas Jefferson

Bill Clinton

Ronald Reagan

Lincoln, Roosevelt (both of them), Kennedy and Washington.

Most underrated:

Van Buren, Hamilton

Lincoln, Roosevelt (both of them), Kennedy and Washington.

Most underrated:

Van Buren, Hamilton

Umm Alexander Hamilton was never a President.

Overrated: Reagan by a landslide (he had undiagnosed Alzheimer's), followed by 54Ëš40' Polk, Eisenhower, and Coolidge

Underrated: John Quincy Adams, Taylor, Arthur

Lincoln, Roosevelt (both of them), Kennedy and Washington.

Yeah, I meant Benjamin Harrison...stupid typo.

harry s. truman

LBJ

i don't think there's anybody else worth nominating left.

Well, I don't think there are that many "overrated" presidents. This isn't "bad" just "overrated."

The highly thought of main-stream Presidents:

Washington

Jefferson

Lincoln

Teddy Roosevelt

FDR

Truman

Eisenhower

Kennedy

Reagan

I don't know how you can include Washington on that list. There was no precedent for the job. He established the office of the Presidency of the United States. I just don't see the basis for including a guy that no one in the US had any idea what he was supposed to do really.

this is a very interesting question that you ask here...and i could go on and on about the topic...but ill keep it short and sweet...

overrated

teddy

reagan

truman

underrated

clinton(sorry republicans...as bad as you make him out to be...he was pretty good)

jefferson(best real estate deal in history?)

john quicny adams(maybe not so much for his presidency...but his public life in general...he was a pretty important guy to have around)

Overrated:

John F. Kennedy

William Clinton

Thomas Jefferson

Andrew Jackson

Underrated:

George H.W. Bush

Gerald Ford

John Adams

John Quincy Adams

Reagan

Eisenhower

Kennedy

I only picked Kennedy because he was only in office for two years and he didn't get to accomplish what he wanted, but is still regarded as one of the greatest.

Underrated:

George H.W. Bush

Gerald Ford

John Adams

John Quincy Adams

Um..

what did Ford or Adams Sr. do?

Besides Adams passing an unconstitutional law that went against the Bill of Rights...

Adams secured a peace with France that led to the Jefferson administration's ability to buy the Louisiana Purchase. Adams also killed the high federalist hopes of a police state. (He was not a proponent of the Alien and Sedition Acts.)

John Adams:

Averted war with France in 1798 (look up the quasi-war)

Appointed John Marshall Chief Justice of the Supreme Court

Refused to sign any deportation orders despite the veto-proof passage of the Alien & Sedition Acts.

Built the US Navy into a viable fighting force, authorizing the very successful frigates that were vital in the War of 1812.

Gerald Ford:

Recovered the power of the Presidency from the Congress after Watergate, primarily by pardoning Nixon (which killed his reelection chances)

Signed the Helsinki Accords which, despite being unpopular with Consevatives at the time, got the Soviets to acknowledge universal human rights, one of the nails in their coffin

IMO the most underated president is Taft

They definatly underated Taft, which is why they eventually had to buy a new bathtub in the white house for him. :mischief

Most Overrated right now is EASILY William Jefferson Clinton.

Way to take credit for economic growth fueled by the technology boom - which was generated by fear of the Y2K bug! :thumbup
