November 14, 200619 yr Brandon Webb received 15 of the 32 first-place votes to win the NL Cy Young Award on Tuesday. Amazingly enough, the NL voters are 2-for-2. Webb looked liked the best choice to us, though there were arguments to be made for Chris Carpenter, Roy Oswalt and Bronson Arroyo. The only truly awful choice would have been Trevor Hoffman, who received 12 first-place votes and finished second with 77 points, 26 behind Webb. Carpenter was third with two first-place votes and 63 points. Oswalt received three first-place votes, but because he was left off 19 ballots, he finished with 31 points. Also receiving votes were Carlos Zambrano (six points), Billy Wagner (four), John Smoltz (three) and Takashi Saito (one). Source: Rotoworld
November 14, 200619 yr Webb takes home NL Cy Young Right-hander beats out Hoffman, Carpenter for honor By Lindsey Frazier / MLB.com PHOENIX -- Arizona right-hander Brandon Webb made his first All-Star appearance in 2006 and ran off a 30-inning scoreless streak. Now he has capped the year off with his greatest achievement. On Tuesday, Webb was named the National League Cy Young Award winner by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Webb, 27, finished the season with a 16-8 record and 3.10 ERA in 33 starts. His 16 wins tied five other pitchers -- the Reds' Aaron Harang, the Dodgers' Derek Lowe and Brad Penny, the Braves' John Smoltz and the Cubs' Carlos Zambrano -- for the most victories in the National League, though it is the lowest win total by a Cy Young winner in any year not shortened by labor issues. ... November 14, 200619 yr Author No clear cut winner in the NL IMHO. Coulda gone anywhere. Well done Webb. edit... Thanks for the merge Beetle
November 14, 200619 yr I've never liked Webb ever since the comments he made in 2003 about how he should've won ROY
November 14, 200619 yr He did arguably have a better year than Dontrelle in 03, and he's a great choice for this year. Congrats, Brandon!
November 14, 200619 yr Wow, how in the world did the voters place Hoffman 2nd? Webb/Carpenter/Oswalt probably split 1-2 on a lot of ballots and Hoffman was probably universally named 3rd on the ballots. Crazy point system.
November 14, 200619 yr Good point. The mediocrity and wide openness of the race probably boosted him.
November 14, 200619 yr Author Good point. The mediocrity and wide openness of the race probably boosted him. I'm sure the fact that he set a new saves record blinded a few voters as well.
November 14, 200619 yr He did arguably have a better year than Dontrelle in 03. Better year or not, it was still unprofessional and classless on his part.
November 14, 200619 yr While we all know Dontrelle would not have done that, it is unfair to hold other players up to that. He was probably asked how he felt about the award and he gave his honest opinion. I'm sure he didn't call a press conference to announce it.

Webb/Carpenter/Oswalt probably split 1-2 on a lot of ballots and Hoffman was probably universally named 3rd on the ballots. Crazy point system. Hoffman got 12 first place votes, 3 second, and 8 third. He was left off 9 ballots completely.
November 14, 200619 yr Reality has struck, absolutely no 20 game winners this year. Wow, what a close race, just how did it translate to this?
November 15, 200619 yr what Zambrano did for that crappy cubs team should have at least gotten him some more votes considering the mediocrity of the options
