November 23, 200619 yr Still a Dave Roberts fan. Why? He's 34, last season was his best OBP ever, and he has no slugging percentage. We've already seen his best years. I could see him as a one season band-aid, but not as any part of the teams future.
November 23, 200619 yr Still a Dave Roberts fan. Wow, I can't beleive I forgot about him, I was sure he stayed with SD. He would be great but we already have a good 1-2 punch though
November 23, 200619 yr Would make quite a good one year rental, but I still am in favor of bringing in someone young for the future.
November 24, 200619 yr they are both worthwhile for this team, but Dave Roberts would be more appealing price range wise to us.
November 24, 200619 yr The one problem with mature players in this current frenzied free agent market is meeting their demand for multiple years when that doesn't fit the team's needs and leaving it exposed to an underperforming player/contract. Youth wins out not because younger is better but because of the economics of the game.
November 24, 200619 yr Jay Payton is one year younger only, more expensive, also had a career year last year (and ultimately a worse overall player in my mind). Roberts' OBP was also near .360 in 2005 as well. His last two seasons ARE his best years. While he may not be a part of the future, he's basically the only viable CF FA option and most trade options are either unsure things or will cost too many talented prospects. The only real problem I see with Roberts is that he might be an injury risk. I am not fond of Payton either. I said: Why? He's 34, last season was his best OBP ever, and he has no slugging percentage. We've already seen his best years. I could see him as a one season band-aid, but not as any part of the teams future. So on that front I suppose we can agree. On the other hand. I'd rather acquire another guy to go into the 28 or younger, could make the Marlins a dynasty for 5+ years crowd.
