The Florida Marlins sent for Ramirez, one of their key players, on Thursday. Ramirez will be examined Friday by the Marlins' doctors and plans to return to Santo Domingo on Saturday. "It's a precautionary checkup," Ramirez said. "I feel soreness when I swing. It isn't something serious, but the Marlins and I prefer to avoid risks." Ramirez said he is looking forward to playing with the Licey Tigers in the Dominican postseason. "I hope I can return and help Licey defend their championship, but everything will depend on the results of my shoulder exams," Ramirez said. The 22-year-old Dominican was one of baseball's top shortstops last season after winning the job on a regular basis in spring training. Ramirez led major league rookies in batting average (.292), hits (185), triples (11), stolen bases (51) and runs scored (119). He was also second in doubles (46), hit 17 home runs and scored 59 runs. The shortstop was acquired by the Marlins from Boston in a trade that sent right-hander Josh Beckett and third baseman Mike Lowell to the Red Sox after the 2005 season. Ramirez became the sixth Dominican to win the Rookie of the Year award. Shortstops Alfredo Griffin (1979) and Angel Berroa (2003) won in the American League, while outfielder Raul Mondesi (1994), shortstop Rafael Furcal (2000) and first baseman Albert Pujols (2001) won in the NL.

A Marlins spokesman said Ramirez, who was named the 2006 National League Rookie of the Year in November, would be ready by spring training in February. Ramirez injured the same shoulder last season. After being examined on Friday in South Florida by Marlins team physician Dr. Dan Kanell, Ramirez has been diagnosed as having a left shoulder strain. He will undergo rehab treatment, but the team expects him to be ready for the start of Spring Training. Marlins pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training at the Roger Dean Stadium complex in Jupiter, Fla., on Feb. 17. Position players report on Feb. 19. According to Ramirez's agent, Andy Mota, the strain occurred on Wednesday night. Ramirez was running the bases and fell on the shoulder while sliding. Mota said Ramirez was checked out as a "precaution" and that he should be fine. Ramirez is expected to return to the Dominican on Saturday. Ramirez, who turned 23 on Dec. 23, has been playing for the Licey Tigers in the Dominican. He will not be playing for Licey for the remainder of the Winter League season. Acquired by the Marlins as part of a blockbuster trade with the Red Sox in November of 2005, Ramirez became the Marlins' second Rookie of the Year winner. In 2003, Dontrelle Willis claimed the honor. In 158 games, Ramirez batted .292 with 17 home runs and 59 RBIs. He added 185 hits, including 46 doubles and 11 triples, and he stole 51 bases. Until Spring Training begins, Ramirez will be undergoing shoulder strengthening drills. Ramirez says he is being shut down as a precaution. December 30, 200619 yr its just a strained shoulder but they need to be precautionary, we need him healthy for season, he is one of the sparks in our lineup.
