October 9, 200322 yr ok tonight during the game we where talking about how stupid it is to have the announcers they have, and I brought up that Al Leiter trashed the Marlins to the media when Andy Fox stole home on a pickoff move to first a year or so ago. I said how Leiter said that is not the way you play baseball blablabla. Well that got me starting to search for it. Beings that I said that in the 5th inning and have been looking for it til RIGHT NOW ...I finally found somethin from that day. Although I do remember him going on and saying more. And I remember the sound bite he said it with a very smug tone of voice. you may not care, but I guess you just had to be there... http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sport...all/3388427.htm ''No disrespect to the Marlins, but they play like they have nothing to lose,'' Leiter said. 'They steal home, and it's like, `Yee-ha! Let's have some fun.' [Fox] gets thrown out at the plate and it's no big deal. But in a place like New York, you get thrown out and it's reckless baseball.'' *note it is very hard finding a quote from a regular season game from june of 2002. I was hoping for the whole thing, but this will have to do. He did bash the marlins and now he is the announcer for them. Not to mention he plays for a divisional rival.
October 9, 200322 yr Bret Boone is calling a series in which his brother plays for one of the teams. It could be worse. Granted, I didn't watch that game, so I don't know how he was.
October 9, 200322 yr Didn't really mind Leiter too much during the game. Gave a little insight into how a pitcher really feels out there. He did better than Boone for sure.
October 9, 200322 yr Eh, Leiter didn't sound particularly biased, although I thought he should've knocked on the ump's strikezone for us in Game 2. Regardless, he does a decent job in holding back his dislike for us. He spoke in the smug, biting tone about the Marlins in the weeks leading up to his shipoff a couple years ago, and he seemed pretty happy to be done with us. He's a crappy commentator, though. I don't see him having much of a future in it. He's too stumbly and not very fluid.
October 9, 200322 yr I actually liked Leiter in the booth. Especially the insight he gave, and how he made Steve Lyons look like an idiot on multiple occasions. He gave some of the most intelligent color commentary I've heard in a while. Caveat - I'm speaking mostly about Game 1, as clicked over to the Yanks-Sox game pretty quickly after Penny got pasted.
October 9, 200322 yr i took it to mean (at least partly) that he's jealous that the Marlins are able to play that way & have fun. if you make that play in NY and it doesn't work, you get buried. here it's just good aggressive baseball. not to mention he just got beat and was probably upset about it. i thought he did a decent job for his first time. (if that was his first) Steve Lyons I'm not so crazy about however...
October 9, 200322 yr i liked leiter in game 1 ... seemed very nervous at first, but settled in nicely ... even would contradict lyons ("well, actually that was a 2 seamer, but anyway..") didn't seem to be really biased or anything
October 9, 200322 yr Author regardless if he is showing his biase or not. People know that he said those things he said. People know that he was part of the WS team and then ditched. People know he plays for the Mets. People know that the Mets and Marlins have a rivalry. then Lyons a chicago guy. and an american league guy. WTF All Im saying is why in the heck did they get these guys if your going for the current player angle pick someone from an umpartial team. I mean whats wrong with having a guy like Sean Green? Someone who has no feelings for either team? and by the way Leiter isn't doing a horrible job, im just saying. Why put him in the position where he could?
