I think Rollins is just being a homer

The Mets rotation that will be starting the season is, for the most part, the same rotation that won the bulk of 97 games last season. The Mets bullpen is very strong, their bench is very strong, and their line-up may be the best in NL East. THe Phillies have to beat the Mets first.

And I realy don't understand how everyone can look statistically at both rotations and claim that the Phillies' is that much better. Jamie Moyer and El Duque are washes. Same with Myers and Maine. Perez and Eaton is at best a puch for the Phillies. Humber/Pelfrey and Hamels gives a slight edge to Phils, but both hae very good promise. That leave Glavine and Garcia -- and that's really hard to call. Garcia hasn't pitched well and Glavine is getting older. It really is quite close.

You are missing the 26 wins that Pedro and Trachsel brought your team. So tell me how that is the majority of the same rotation that won 97 last year?

You act as if Pedro is out for the year. His rehab is ahead of schedule and he's due back around the ASB. He was injured a lot last year and pitched like crap most of the time when he was healthy. His absence is not that earth shattering considering what we did when he did and didn't have him. In the end, we're likely to get somewhere in the ballpark of 20 starts -- at worst, the same numbers as last year; at best, a healthy Pedro who can hit the mid 90's regularly.

 

Trachsel was mediocre at best and only won the amount of games he did because the offense carried him. The fact he remains unsigned shows how highly he is thought of. There is no doubt in my mind that Pelfrey or Humber can give us just as much of a chance, if not better, to win every time out.

 

Also, tose win totals are deceiving. We threw a ton of crap against the wall last year hoping something stuck in the bottom of the rotation -- Jeremi Gonzalez, Brian Bannister, Jose Lima, Victor Zambrano, Dave Williams, Alay Soler, Mike Pelfrey. The guys that figure prominently to play a part in rotation (Glavine, Hernandez, Maine, Pedro, Perez) all fall within the top 7 on last year's team in games started. This year's starts pitched in 101 games last year, the rotation that started the bulk of last year's games.

 

SO in short, the only real difference is Trachsel, who isn't that great and is easily replaced.

Can Reyes have another year like last one for the Mets? I find that hard to digest. The pitching is sooo questionable although their bullpen is still a force to reckon with this season. That team is prime for a disappointing season. The Phillies on the other hand are hungry and they play us tough. Atlanta is history!

Can Reyes have another year like last one for the Mets? I find that hard to digest. The pitching is sooo questionable although their bullpen is still a force to reckon with this season. That team is prime for a disappointing season. The Phillies on the other hand are hungry and they play us tough. Atlanta is history!

What about the Phil bullpen? Do you honestly think Gordon -- at his age -- can have another year like that? And their set-up men are garbage.

 

As for Reyes, I think he'll have a good year. Maybe not up to the same overall numbers as last year, but he's really learning how to become a baseball instead of just an athlete. To me, the beauty of this team is that this line-up and bench is so complete that we aren't dependent on one singular player.

your original statement still flawed. At this point, you really cant count on Pedro for anything until you can see what he can actually do after his injury. But keep on being a blind homer.

Ryan Madson has actually been a solid set-up in his 2 full seasons as a guy in the bullpen. Set-up can't get much worse after Arthur Rhodes, and Antonio Alfonseca could be a great sleeper signing. Gordon on the other hand, durability will be his only question. If he's healthy for at least the bulk of hte season, we have a chance at the playoffs.
