Good grief.... Was just posting what I heard while checking my mail with the TV on in the background. I'm sure in a few hours the story will be in print somewhere.

I saw the news story hit as well. I've been looking for it on WSVN.com but they are too busy covering Anna Nicole and now Brittney Spears going back into rehab.

Refresh my memory. The house was the chamber to previously approve this before getting blocked in the Senate? Or vice versa?

So basically we're back to where we left off, nothing gained, nothing lost.

Yep. Not only that, but it was two committees that approved the Marlins funding. It was not the entire Senate.

I would say we have gained already, since the leadership is friendly towards getting things approved

Marlins in the past were snubbed by the Senate. In 2006 the Senate passed the bill last minute, but the bill did not get passed by the House in time.

The House in previous years had been the cooperative body.

In 2007, both chambers are controlled by South Floridians and the Governor from St. Pete is supportive of this.

Well, yeah, no kidding Crist is a big supporter, but at the end Bush wasn't the opponent he was with Henry.

My contention is that there's still very very little new to get excited about. Until we get into previously uncharted territory, it's just a situation of "we've been here before."

The new territory is that before the session even starts, the bill gets out of this Senate committee without a nay vote. That is impressive.

And the key is we're still talking about committee

Cue Iverson: Practice??!!?

correct. but no need to be pesimistic either or use past experiences to project future outcome

And the key is we're still talking about committee

Practice that could kill the bill before it even has a chance? This is a big milestone.

See, I get that you like being worked up over little things, but this is hardly a milestone.

Let's play a real life example here. You're a hiker. You want to climb to the top of the local 1,200 foot mountain. The first couple times you try you didn't get very far at all. After a few more cracks you're finally able to set up base camp at 400 feet. After a wicked snow-storm forces you down you try again. And again you get back to 400 feet. Should you be doing cartwheels calling it a "big milestone"?

:mischief2

Not a good analogy. A better analogy is saying that previously you got to 400 feet in one day and then failed. Now you get to 400 feet in a few hours. There is better momentum now than in the past.

Bills on Marlins stadium issue sail through 1st Senate committee

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- No opposition surfaced Tuesday to legislation that would give South Florida officials $60 million in state money to build a half-billion dollar, retractable-roof baseball park in downtown Miami.

Two similar bills sponsored by Miami lawmakers zipped through the Senate Commerce Committee in less than an hour after testimony from three South Florida supporters of the new ballpark.

Sens. Rudy Garcia and Alex Diaz de la Portilla, who chaired the commerce panel, both said they hoped to soon combine the bills (SB 528 and SB 544) that won unanimous approval Tuesday. "It does feel like there's a lot of good momentum, a lot of teamwork," said George Burgess, Miami-Dade County manager. "Major League Baseball is heavily involved, which we think is terrific, along with the Marlins, the city of Miami and Dade County."

Proposals for a new Florida Marlins stadium have frequently come before the Legislature in recent years, but this is the first under new Gov. Charlie Crist, a proponent of the economic benefits spun off by professional sports franchises. Crist's predecessor, former Gov. Jeb Bush, generally opposed helping out the Marlins with a state subsidy.

"I generally am favorably inclined toward continuing to support Major League Baseball, football," Crist said Tuesday. "These things that produce a lot of jobs."

The preferred site for the publicly owned 38,000-seat stadium would be in downtown Miami, directly north of the government center and west of a Metro Rail station. The Marlins would receive $2 million annually from the state over 30 years if the legislation passes.

"This is the sixth attempt," Diaz de la Portilla said, adding he hoped the community unity expressed Tuesday would help the Legislature provide "that last piece of the puzzle."
